World Cup Winners Now Get “World Champions” Badge
Much as we complain about FIFA, they do have the occasional good idea. Like the World Cup for example. Think we can all agree that’s been a success.
Not so sure about some of the madness that spews from Sepp’s pie-hole, 6+5 or giving 19 year old footballers year-long bans from football, but there’s no arguing with the World Cup. And this week FIFA finally came up with another good idea: World Champions badges for teams that win the big prize.
We already have stars signifying championship wins of various shapes and sizes. But from now on, the World Cup holders will be given a badge to wear on their national team jerseys reading very bluntly “World Champions”.
Italy were the first to get the honour when Blatter presented the team with the badge earlier this week. The deal is that the World Cup holders can proudly display the badge for the four years (or in Italy’s case, two more years) until the next World Cup. And if anyone gives that team’s players or fans any shit, presumably they can just point at the badge and smile.
