World Cup Qualifier Open Thread: Talk About Your Team

By: Laurie | October 11th, 2008 | 14 Comments »

As I am writing this, England has just started, and Faroe Island and Austria are tied, 1-1. (And best of all, the Faroe goal wasn’t even scored by a first stringer. It was scored by a substitute.) And Tunisia is slaughtering poor little Seychelles, 5-0.

If you’re watching (or have watched) any of the World Cup qualifier games, leave your thoughts in the comments. Who’s doing well? Who’s sucking? What streams are you watching?

Tell us what’s going on with your favorite (and least favorite teams.)

Switzerland just defeated Latvia 2-1 in a very awkward game. The Swiss had countless chances but were denied by the excellent Latvian keeper. Frei scored in the second half, a Latvian player was sent off, Latvia drew with a header on a set-piece before Switzerland’s winning goal through N’Kufo which happened 1 minute later. Switzerland could have easily scored a 3rd with Yakin coming on for Frei but the result is sufficient in a must-win game.

Just saw England beat Kazakhstan 5-1. Easily the least enjoyable 5-1 win I’ve ever seen. Ashely Cole gifted Kazakhstan a goal with a horror back pass.

Tijan Jaiteh has just eliminated Senegal! Well done to Gambia. Picking up an impressive draw in Dakar against rivals Senegal. Gambia however will go out tomorrow should Guinea take down Kenya which I’m of course rooting for.

France amazingly came back from a two-goal deficit and got the point. No idea if it will save Domenech’s job or not.

England fans should learn from the ‘jocks’ up norf!! Iwelumo misses an open goal and the fans are still with him, Ashley Cole misplaces a pass and the Kaza’s score and Cole gets roundly booed!!

The boos didn’t stop till England got their 3rd, 4th and 5th. England hang your heads in shame and what is more remarkable 30% of Wembley is owned by the corporates!!!

See Iwelumo’s miss here

Rene Adler was good as advertised, and then some. Bundesliga watchers have known this for a year or so, but now all of Europe will see. The Germans looked like the best team in the world in the first half..but more like the Euro final in the 2nd. A lot to be happy with for both Germany and Russia though a draw would have been deserved.

I was going to say the same thing. His stock just went up. He definitely has proven that he deserves his chance in the goal. The defense almost collapsed in the second half, Adler was literally the saving grace.
