World Cup Qualifier Open Thread — Leave Comments on Your Team

By: Laurie | October 15th, 2008 | 18 Comments »

As I write this, Japan has drawn with little Uzbekistan, 1-1. It’s looking like Israel and Latvia will also draw, also 1-1, barring last-second heroics. And my favorite plucky minnow team, Faroe Islands, is losing to Lithuania by only one goal, 1-0. (Pictured.) Oh, and Australia thumped Qatar, 4-0, bringing smiles to the faces of those who are fans of Iraq. And karma.

How are your teams doing today? (Or how did they do? Or how will they do?) Who has looked particularly good, and who has looked like they should be playing another game altogether?

Let us know by leaving your thoughts in the comments section.

I see poor Cashley didn’t even make this bench for this England game.

You needed me. I tuned into the stream, and next thing you know, Rooney’s scored.

Oh, poor Stevie G. That was an ugly miss. At least he has the previous goal to make up for it.

Switzerland triumph in Piraeus, with a 2-1 win over Greece. Solid defensive performance by the Swiss with the Greeks who enjoyed most of the chances but failed to avoid the defeat. Frei scored on a penalty, Charisteas drew level in the second half and a magnificent Hakan Yakin pass together with a terrible defensive mistake by Papadopoulous made it easy for Nkufo to score the winning goal. Honestly, a draw should have been the result but with this win Group 2 has a completely different picture.
Israel drew away in Latvia 1-1.
So: 1. Greece 9 pts 2. Israel 8 pts. 3. Switzerland 7 pts.
Switzerland is back on track, especially considering that the two away games with the two strongest teams of the group are behind.

Brazil, again, drawed disappointingly in front of the fans. It’s their third consecutive goalless game playing at home in qualifyers. Coach Dunga was booed from the 15th minute on. The Brazilian side was overall uninspired, slow and boring. I hope Dunga resigns, but it won’t happen. My opinion is that he’ll keep the job at least until August 2009. But I hope my opinion’s wrong.

The Concacaf region is looking rather interesting, trinidad beating a US B-team also.
