World Cup 2018/2022 Bidding Nation Logos and Slogans

Bidding to host the World Cup is all about infrastructure. You need quality stadia, reliable public transport and an absolute boatload of available hotel rooms.

But you also need a nice looking logo and a catchy slogan. So below are listed all the available logos and slogans for the various World Cup 2018/2022 bids.

Australia 2018/2022 – “Come Play!”


Belgium/Netherlands 2018/2022 – “Together for Great Goals”

(Together in theory, but the fact that the Netherlands side of the logo dwarfs the Belgian side is surely a coded message.)


England 2018/2022 – “…”

Deliberately slogan free. Apparently the “Football’s Coming Home” slogan for the 2006 bid was considered arrogant, so this time they’re not risking anything.


Qatar 2022

USA 2018/2022 – “The Game is in Us”


Japan 2018/2022

No slogan that I could find, but they do have a powerful robot goodwill ambassador. That has to count for something.


Russia 2018/2022 – “Ready to Inspire!”

I like that Russia’s logo is the only one to do anything creative with the awkward 2018/22 numbers. Good on them.


(Despite furious Googling, I was unable to find logos for Japan, South Korea, Indonesia Mexico (since withdrawn), Russia, or the joint bid from Spain & Portugal. So they must not want it as badly. If you spot any of these logos, please leave a link in the comments.)

Please feel free to compare the above (official) slogans with those suggested by World Cup Blog readers.

The main thing I’m noticing is that none of the above are particularly good. The USA bid looks like a nuersery/kindergarten logo, the England bid is just the word England badly shaped into a football, and Australia went with the rather unimaginative two kangaroos and a soccer ball. Only Qatar and Belgium/Netherlands get a passing grade.

The only explanation I can think of is that if any of the above bids are successful, they’ll have to come up with a whole new logo for the actual tournament. Which might explain why Qatar and Belgium/Netherlands have put the effort in early. Hopefully the other bids are just keeping their graphic design powder dry.

FIFA will announce the World Cup 2018 and 2022 hosts in December 2010.

i’m in a pedantic mood, so….

not sure the Dutch ‘half’ of the Flatlands bid does dwarf the Belgian side, actually. The red stripe of the Belgian flag is over the other side of the ball.

My vote – if I had one – would go to Oz. They’ve never hosted it before and did a fantastic job of the Olympics in 2000.
Although – and this goes for the USA bid and any other joint bids – I think tournaments should be hosted in an area which makes travel between venues easy and not too expensive.
The whole of Australia, or the whole of the United States, hosting an event is like the whole of Europe hosting it, as they are of comparable size. Having one match in Perth and your next match in Sydney would be like having one match at Wembley and your next match in Istanbul.

Qatar’s website offers an absolute plethora of information.

And I totally agree with you steve x, I used to think I wanted a US world cup, and I still do, but now I think I would actually be able to watch more matches if it were held in a smaller country.

as an Aussie football fan i personally think our slogan is underwhelming.
doesn’t rise above the crowd. A columnist for sbs Jess FInk suggested a more catchy one imo.

To the people moaning about the Australian one – it’s meant to quickly show you which country the bid is for – a bit hard to represent the modern, urban, dynamic cosmopolitan culture of Australia in a logo.

Anyway, it’s a logo for ef’s sake – the World Cup won’t be won by the quality of the bidding nations logo.

I’d say the Yanks will get 2018 and the Brits will get 2022 – we don’t have a hope really.

As an englishman, I’m desparate to see us get the World Cup again.

The bid team has made a careful decision not to talk about football coming home, and so far only one man has mentioned it.

Gordon Brown. Brilliant. He won’t even let us get on with our sport in peace now.

As much as I would like to see the World Cup come back to the US, I really have to agree with the above sentiments in that it should be held in a smaller country. There just isn’t the atmosphere of hosting an event where it takes a good part of a day by plane to move from venue to venue – let alone the expense and the fatigue involved for both the fans and the teams. Maybe we can limit it to the Northeast/Midwest or West Coast/Southwest. In any event we need a better logo than the one stolen from the daycare center.

Completely agree Nick, it would never happen but maybe if there was a NY, Philly, DC, NE joint bid, same with a SW bid with Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, etc.

limiting the US bid to one region of the country is ridiculous. if (and when) the US gets 2022, they’ll set up the world cup like the ncaa basketball tournament and have the groups located in one particular region in the country. i.e. west coast, south, northeast, midwest, southeast, southwest. travel between those cities would be considerably less expensive for fans, eliminating awful trips like seattle to miami or boston to los angeles. most knock-out stage game pairings are done before the tournament, so fans already know their options for those with enough time to make travel arrangements.

basically, if done correctly and similar to this approach, travel will not be an issue with the US bid.
