Welcome to Kosovo
Yesterday’s dramatic declaration of Kosovan independence means a new country on the map, and probably a new football team in the world. Or a new official football team anyway, because the Kosovan national team has actually been around since 1993. OK, they’ve only played seven games in fifteen years, but they’ve got a Wikipedia page and everything. But it’s a bit difficult to get anywhere in world football when FIFA and UEFA don’t officially recognize you.
Kosovan independence will mean a redesign of the kit, currently modeled on Albania’s red and black. But once the new nation of Kosovo has a flag and national colours, they’ll get a football kit to match. It should also mean a step towards recognition by the governing bodies. Not in time for World Cup 2010 qualification, but maybe in time for Euro 2012 qualification? Let’s hope they’re not drawn in the same qualification group as Serbia. That could mean trouble.

Good luck to the new Kosovan side. You’re always welcome to pop over to Scotland for a friendly, though I think we’d prefer to host, for now.

As an Albanian its great to see Kosova gain independence, although as i wronte in an article, that my spell the end of a good Albanian national team!
