Totally Partisan Liveblog: USA vs. Mexico Gold Cup Final

By: Laurie | July 26th, 2009 | 11 Comments »

Welcome to our totally partisan liveblog for the USA-Mexico Gold Cup final. Our Mexico blogger Andrea will be here rooting for Mexico, and with our USA bloggers otherwise occupied today, I’ll be trying to hold up the US end of thing.

As we’ve mentioned before, with nothing really at stake in this tournament both USA and Mexico are using Gold Cup as a way to get a look at some players who don’t normally get a chance with the national teams, with an eye toward the World Cup squads next summer. (Assuming both teams qualify.)

Look for a very high-energy, hard-fought match, and may the best team win!

(We’re having a few technical difficulties, but be sure to check back as we approach game time — 3:00 Eastern.)

Fixed. Join us now!

Why don’t the Gold Cup and Copa America just combine and make 1 tournament? It could be like a 16-team tournament with qualification rounds rather than having 2 gold cups with only 12 teams every 2 years. This one is basically worseless since winning it won’t win you a berth in the Confederations Cup.

It’s at 3pm Pacific time, right? Univision?

Actually, winning the Gold Cup is precisely how you qualify for the Confederations Cup – USMNT won in 2007, securing a berth in ConfedCup 2009.

You’re both right. The year-before-World Cup one is pretty worthless, since it’s the year-after-World Cup winner that goes to the Confed Cup.

And I’m not sure that CONCACAF is ready for Copa America. It’s kind of fun to see the minnows like Guadeloupe have a place to shine. Maybe they could make Gold Cup every four years?

Ok, so this is an embarrassing result for this group of players, and Mexico deserves the win. However, Max Bretos needs to get a grip. To say over and over that this sways the balance of power in CONCACAF and gives Mexico the edge in next month’s WCQ is just ridiculous. Not a single starter today will start at Azteca, probably only 2 or 3 will even be on the roster.
Get a clue Max, and we’ll see you all in August.

The game wasn’t on ESPN 360. Anyone know where a guy without a TV can see it?

Not a problem. I ended up losing my computer for 10 minutes, but it was all over by that point and I don’t think either of us would have wanted to be involved anyhow.

Man, the ‘jicanos were taking this pretty dang seriously! I know all gringos look alike, but they did realize they weren’t exactly playing against anything resembling the regular team, right?
It was worse than I expected, but I would’ve been stunned had the US *not* been thoroughly beaten. Los Tri had a lot of talented people on the field, and the US had a joke of a team. CONCACAF is a joke, and so is having the Gold Cup every year/two years/three years… they can’t really make up their minds about how often it should take place.
