Soundoff: Your Football Team’s Biggest International Rival?

rivalsIn honour of today’s Algeria vs Egypt showdown in Sudan, I had planned on putting together a Top 10 Biggest International Rivalries post. But halfway through I realized it wasn’t a great idea. Your own national team’s rivalry will always feel bigger than anyone else’s, so why include some in a Top 10 but not others?

Also, it’s not always so straightforward. I’m an England fan, and I know Scotland fans would love to see Scotland beat England. But I’d love to see England beat Germany. And Germany fans seem more interested in Germany beating the Netherlands.

So, rather than trying to definitively list the biggest international rivalries and get it wrong, let’s try this instead: You tell me. Please share two things in the comments:

1. Your national team.
2. The rival national team you’d most like to see them beat.

If you want to tell is why, then that works too. But please keep the reasons football related.

Scotland, and yes, no surprise, I’d most like to see us beat England. It’s hard to keep the reasons entirely football-related, but it’s the oldest rivalry in the game, and we realize that these days, it’s mostly one-sided.

    Italy, and France.

  • Serpent

Russia, and because of the humiliating 7-1 defeat a few years ago I’d love to see them beat Portugal. i like Portugal too though :D

  • http://fm8.theoffside.com Samir

Agree with Alessio!! Although I’ll love to see them beat Brasil!

Coming from Singapore myself, it will have to be Malaysia. We do actually have a rivalry with them, as they are our next-door neighbour. Not only that, the papers here do like to hype it up. But it is a shame we do not meet as often as it was the case a few decades ago in my parents’ time. At least I am lucky enough to have witnessed our national team beating Malaysia in a regional tournament a few years ago…and it went all the way to penalties even.

Away from that, being an England supporter as well…my sentiment is the same as you, Daryl.

  • Al

Mexico, and USA. Beating them on American soil is awesome, but defeating them at home is simply monumental each and every time.

  • Al

Also, I love when we beat Honduras and El Salvador almost as much. Mostly because they despise us more than us to them.

  • nick

    Canada beating the United States.

    Italia beating Brazil!

  • http://www.seethecup.com/2010-world-cup/update-world-cup-tickets/ Bruno Romani

    Brazil. Beating Argentina obviously.

  • Il Giallorosso.

    Italy
    France

  • http://italy.theoffside.com Francesco

As an Italy fan, I would love nothing more to see Raymond Domenech crash and burn (hopefully tonight). But I feel like the rivalry with France has waned, as we pretty much got our revenge, beating them in the World Cup and at Euro 2008. So at this point I would say Brazil are more of Italy’s rivals, as we haven’t beaten them in forever.

  • Bill

USA, and beating Mexico, of course.

  • Jonas

    Belgium beating Netherlands

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Laurie

  • SD

Poland beating Germany, the only team it has never beat, ever (well East Germany doesn’t count). They also knocked us out of countless World Cups and recently the Euro.

  • http://france.theoffside.com/ Thomas

France beating Italy. That just wins hands down.

Romania beating Bulgaria. Cant stand bulgarians. Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia and Italia are on that list too.

Dominican Republic, beating Puerto Rico (just to knock them off their f***ing perch, in the words of SAF :P ). The battle to avoid being the worst futbol team in Latin America rages on!

  • Jacob

Netherlands – beating Germany. A rivalry not as full of genuine hate as it used to be, but still plenty of passion. My wife’s grandfather used to complain that the Germans stole his bicycle during the occupation every time they played.
