Soundoff: Greatest World Cup Goal.

ITV compiled this little gem of the 50 greatest goals in World Cup history a few years back, which then made it to YouTube and then to our doorstep. Given that ITV is a proper media outlet, this should be rather accurate. However, it’s likely that there a few worthy omissions – notably those when television cameras weren’t quite so abundant. Which those are, it’s impossible to say at the moment (except for that rather stellar Argentine movement 4 years ago).

But it’s still a jumping off point to ask the eternal question: what’s the greatest goal in World Cup history? Some will say Diego, others will say Roberto, and some will say Diego again. Fortunately there’s no right answer. Unless there is.

There are different formats in different continents, but if it comes down to one final playoff match to decide if you are in or out, this should not be the spirit behind the World Cup.

Around where i live, Maxi Rodriguez’ goal still stings to this day. We usually replace him whenever we choose Argentina in any football video game :P

All these lists are made by fanatics of X or Y player. Why nobody ever mentions either of the two goals Johann Krankl score against West Germany in WC78 or the Cruyff goal against Brazil in 74? The one Florian Albert scored against Brazil in 66 was in my opinion just as good as Maradona’s 2nd against England. Just to name some. There was the one Josimar scored against Poland but for some reason, whoever picked the list decided to ignored the one he scored against Northern Ireland, any logic here? C’mon WCB.O, here’s a challenge for you guys: without any bias, pick the very best goals ever in a WC, but don’t be lazy and just repeat what everybody does, investigate and surprise us. Great website!
