Rene Higuita Can Still Do the Scorpion

Rene Higuita rolled back the years recently, the 41 year old Colombian keeper dusting off his famous scorpion kick in a testimonial for Victor Aristizabal recently. Poodle-haired legend Carlos Valderamma floats the ball in from a free kick, and Higuita clears with his trick, thirteen years since he debuted the move against England in 1995:

Though I sincerely hope I’m that flexible 13 years from now, I’ve never been 100% happy with the scorpion kick. Mostly because it seems to me that both Redknapp and Valderamma were in on it, and deliberately sent Higuita easy chipped passes. In a way the scorpion kick save is the goalkeeper equivalent of catching the ball on your neck. It looks nice, but it’s absolutely useless in a proper game.

More impressive to my eyes is this scorpion kick goal for Colombia by the man who’s testimonial it was last night, Victor Aristizabal:

I like to see players still taking the time to enjoy the beautiful game. :-)
