Photo: Party Like It’s 2010

The arch for Durban’s WC 2010 stadium (Moses Mabhida Stadium) was such an achievement they threw a massive party just for its completion – the stadium itself still has some way to go. The genius aspect? A tram will hitch up to the underside of the structure and rise to the top of the curve for a 360 degree view of Durban. No idea if they’ll allow people to watch the games from that perch, but I could think of worse ideas should funding come up a bit short.

The stadium looks like it’ll be one of the world’s premier stadiums – heads and shoulders above any in Africa, surely – or at least the designs after the jump would indicate such.

Much of the controversy surrounding the massive undertaking is probably exactly what you’re thinking right now: outside of one month in 2010, what the hell are they going to use it for? Apparently it’s going to be multi-use (rugby, track & field, etc.).

Sorry South Africa no party for me. I just found out that your government has refused a visa for the Dalai Lama because it would overshadow the event. What a crock!!! Pandering to the Chinese government that is guilty of so many human rights abuses in Tibet is no way to win over people. I thought your country had been through enough to be better than that. Shame on you.
