Now We Know Our CONCACAF Olympic Qualifiers
The USA and Honduras are CONCACAF’s Olympic 2008 qualifiers after both won their CONCACAF U-23 semi-finals last night. The US beat Canada 3-0 thanks to two free kicks from little Freddy Adu (the first looks like a cross he got lucky with, the second was a slice of left footed perfection) and a goal from Sacha Kljestan.
Honduras needed penalties to beat Guatemala after a 0-0 draw. The spot-kicks went to sudden death, with Honduras eventually winning 6-5 after Guatemala’s Rafael Morales skied when he needed to score. It would have been rough on Canada had Guatemala qualified instead, as the Canadians had destroyed the Guatemalans 5-0 in the group stage.
There’ll now be a final on March 23rd in Nashville, Tennessee to determine the CONCACAF U-23 champion, but that game has no bearing on the Olympic qualifiers.
