Mikel Arteta For England Movement In Full Swing
If you were to make a list of the best players currently without a senior international cap to their name, Mikel Arteta would be up near the tippety-top, probably duking it out with Amauri for numero uno (at least he’s the best name popping into my noggin at the moment). Amauri is, at the moment, achingly close to obtaining his Italian citizenship, something which doesn’t seem to be bothering Dunga in the least. Arteta is still a ways away, ineligible til January of 2010, but given the relative lack of talent on England’s squad as it is, the fact that Mikel is still waiting for that glass slipper from Vicente Del Bosque has put some Evertonians into a furor.
A group of Everton fans have taken to Facebook (snicker, I know) to create a movement which aims to convince whomever needs convincing (Mikel, I presume) to turn Arteta into an Englishman when his 5 year residency comes to pass in 2010.
I suppose it’s kinda funny, not really something to be taken too seriously – the movement, at least. The chances Arteta is…
i. Still playing for Everton.
ii. Still uncapped for Spain.
…in 15 months seem to be about slim and none. He’s been linked with the Spanish big boys recently and he clearly has the quality to be playing for a top tier club, so one would think making it to five years will be an uphill battle. Then you’d have to consider the likelihood that, should he continue at his current pace, he’s overlooked for Spain again and again. Have to think at least a rash of midfield injuries will come along sooner or later and his eligibility hourglass will vanish into midair. Then there’s the enormous question as to whether Mikel would eschew patriotism for some international footy. Really, it just seems too implausible.
Then again, we were all saying the same thing about Amauri 15 months ago…
