Mikel Arteta For England Movement In Full Swing

By: Chris | October 15th, 2008 | 12 Comments »

If you were to make a list of the best players currently without a senior international cap to their name, Mikel Arteta would be up near the tippety-top, probably duking it out with Amauri for numero uno (at least he’s the best name popping into my noggin at the moment). Amauri is, at the moment, achingly close to obtaining his Italian citizenship, something which doesn’t seem to be bothering Dunga in the least. Arteta is still a ways away, ineligible til January of 2010, but given the relative lack of talent on England’s squad as it is, the fact that Mikel is still waiting for that glass slipper from Vicente Del Bosque has put some Evertonians into a furor.

A group of Everton fans have taken to Facebook (snicker, I know) to create a movement which aims to convince whomever needs convincing (Mikel, I presume) to turn Arteta into an Englishman when his 5 year residency comes to pass in 2010.

I suppose it’s kinda funny, not really something to be taken too seriously - the movement, at least. The chances Arteta is…

i. Still playing for Everton.
ii. Still uncapped for Spain.

…in 15 months seem to be about slim and none. He’s been linked with the Spanish big boys recently and he clearly has the quality to be playing for a top tier club, so one would think making it to five years will be an uphill battle. Then you’d have to consider the likelihood that, should he continue at his current pace, he’s overlooked for Spain again and again. Have to think at least a rash of midfield injuries will come along sooner or later and his eligibility hourglass will vanish into midair. Then there’s the enormous question as to whether Mikel would eschew patriotism for some international footy. Really, it just seems too implausible.

Then again, we were all saying the same thing about Amauri 15 months ago…

If you guys get Arteta, you can just sit Lampard and Gerrard and not worry about that whole boring controversy any longer.

pritty good player, I dont watch the EPL (shit league), but i remember Arteta in the uefa cup tie against my boys from florence and he was evertons best player so maybe he could help england, but england already have a stellar midfield, they need a goalie and a striker

arteta is with cahill the reason everton overachieves every year. Both can play for top 4 of any country. That said arteta plays the same role as many spanish internationals. He will have trouble getting into the team but i think if he moved back to spain he would have already got a call up.

I´m from Spain, and we didn´t need him cause we have most valuous players in his position as: Xavi, Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Cesc Fabregas and a very young player Raúl García, I think he should play with England, it were better for him.

mikel arteta is a class player and very very good i dont know why he is not in the team he is better and skifuller than xabi alonso. also that jeyco doesnt no what hes tlkin about because mikel would be a perfect fit for the team and it woyld be brilliant if he played for england but i understand why he wants to stay spanish because that would be like he has given up on them and to be a true player you have to believe and that has what he has done So say good for him !

MIKEL ES UNA MAQUINA DE JUGAR AL FUTBOL Y UN ORGULLO PARA TODA ESPAÑA.
SI NO JUEGA AHORA, TRANQUILOS QUE YA JUGARÁ, YA QUE ES DIFICIL SOLAPAR UN RELEVO GENERACIONAL EN EL MEDIO DEL CAMPO ESPAÑOL.

QUISIERA DAR LAS GRACIAS A LOS SEGUIDORES DEL EVERTON POR EL DETALLE DE QUERERLO COMO INGLES, MÁS CONSIDERANDO QUE ÉL ES ESPAÑOL.

ARRIBA EVERTON, Y SUERTE MIKEL
