Maradona Wants Ballon d’Or Votes Recounted
I thought there was universal agreement this week that Kaka deserved his Ballon d’Or and that all was right in the world of football. But then along came Diego Maradona, who was and is never afraid to be different, claiming that “Rooney, Ronaldinho and Messi would have been the worthy winners.” His most interesting quote was that “Milan is a team that depends all the time on Kaka but that doesn’t make him the best player in the world.” Interesting because Maradona himself was the best player in the world in the late ’80s when Napoli and to a lesser extent Argentina depended on his talents to a ridiculous extent.
I wish it were as simple as Maradona not wanting a Brazilian to win, but his nomination of Ronaldinho ruins that argument, even more so because Ronaldinho hasn’t exactly had a year to remember. Wayne Rooney’s a much better shout, but if anything he’s been overshadowed by his Man Utd teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who despite being a pretty boy is proving a lot less brittle than Rooney and his endless metatarsal injuries.
Certainly Leo Messi had an exciting year, and we already know how much Maradona loves the little fella. He’s shown countless flashes of brilliance but hasn’t quite dominated important games in the way Kaka has. As Messi matures there’s no doubt he’ll move in from the wings and begin to orchestrate games from the middle of the park, but right now he can’t claim to be as influential as Kaka who basically dragged Milan through the Champions League. It’s true that Kaka’s Serie A form was patchy, but his Champions League efforts were Herculean, so we can reasonably claim that he’s performed at the highest level of club football.
So what does El Diego have against Kaka? Is he just crazy? Or does he have a point?
