Maradona Wants Ballon d’Or Votes Recounted

Maradona Wants Ballon d’Or Votes RecountedI thought there was universal agreement this week that Kaka deserved his Ballon d’Or and that all was right in the world of football. But then along came Diego Maradona, who was and is never afraid to be different, claiming that “Rooney, Ronaldinho and Messi would have been the worthy winners.” His most interesting quote was that “Milan is a team that depends all the time on Kaka but that doesn’t make him the best player in the world.” Interesting because Maradona himself was the best player in the world in the late ’80s when Napoli and to a lesser extent Argentina depended on his talents to a ridiculous extent.

I wish it were as simple as Maradona not wanting a Brazilian to win, but his nomination of Ronaldinho ruins that argument, even more so because Ronaldinho hasn’t exactly had a year to remember. Wayne Rooney’s a much better shout, but if anything he’s been overshadowed by his Man Utd teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who despite being a pretty boy is proving a lot less brittle than Rooney and his endless metatarsal injuries.

Certainly Leo Messi had an exciting year, and we already know how much Maradona loves the little fella. He’s shown countless flashes of brilliance but hasn’t quite dominated important games in the way Kaka has. As Messi matures there’s no doubt he’ll move in from the wings and begin to orchestrate games from the middle of the park, but right now he can’t claim to be as influential as Kaka who basically dragged Milan through the Champions League. It’s true that Kaka’s Serie A form was patchy, but his Champions League efforts were Herculean, so we can reasonably claim that he’s performed at the highest level of club football.

So what does El Diego have against Kaka? Is he just crazy? Or does he have a point?

Maradona has a big mouth.
He was a great player who now has an opinion on everything under the sun.
I thought everybody knew that.
It’s about time we stop paying attention to him.

Thats a bit of an arrogant comment coming from Maradona…..Kaka won the champion’s league and he is doing well now with the Brasil WC qualifiers…..Messi does not deserve it this year IMO

Diego is a walking billboard advert for “don’t do drugs”

Far from a god he is a very flawed human being, possibly in the top five great footballers though.

He is the reason I will not recognize WC 86 as legite. It remains a black mark on Fifa and Argentina to win the world cup the way they did.

@UCK Diego and all …………….supporters.

Guy,

To ansewer your question England won the World Cup in 66. You make a good point that they have to “get their shit together”, no arguement from me.

No respectable person or organization recognizes the 1986 World Cup. so you haven’t changed my mind……..@uck Diego and all his fellow cheating, lying coke head supporters.

Christopher,

66 , Was that the year that England screwed Germany of the world cup title for a ball that never crossed the line.

England paid off the ref’s for that win , just like France paid Brazil off to lose twice in the World Cup Finals. You Englishwomen are still pissed off about that 50 Yard display of Football excellence Maradona Displayed for you , The other goal.

Ron, re why 1986 is not valid.

Glad I logged on so late

Can you tell me who was charged in that bribery scandal you refer to in 1966. I like to keep myself informed so if you could direct me to the site or name of the report your referring to I would very much be interested in reading it. The same applies to the French payoff you refer to against Brazil 2002. I would like to believe that you would not make claims like that without proof. However, if your anything like Diego that would explain your ability to out and out lie and fabricate.

I don’t have a problem with Diegos second, rather pedestrian goal in 1986. The hand of COKE changed the game, the world saw, his teammates saw and if your spiritual God saw what he did. How Argentina could celebrate a world cup essentially won like that is shocking.

In conclusion I repeat 1986 WC is not valid.

God Save the Queen.

Maradona was a class act on the football pitch, but off the field he’s been a snake.
