Well, it’s sad for the team if Riquelme doesn’t play anymore. I think he still has 2 years in front of him and he could help Argentina a lot with his great passes and overview on the pitch. But he won’t return, and that’s a weakening for Argentina for sure.

Riquelme needs to grow thicker skin and learn to accept some criticism from time to time. Not every player is perfect, and instead of working on his flaws, he decided to act like a bitter child and turn his back on Argentina. I realize Maradona “started it first”, but the ball was in Riquelme’s court and he opted to act stubbornly just because of his bruised ego.

I do not blame Maradona at all. I hope Riquelme kicks himself when Argentina lifts the world cup next summer.

link? ESPN Soccernet. It doesn't mention anything about grovelling apologies but Riquelme is a fragile character, so it would be interesting to see if they reconcile.

According to one report (soccernet), Maradona had initially stated that no player who has “retired” from the NT under his stint will be asked to come back but that he has gone back on that statement and is willing to talk to Riquelme.
