After Argentina’s pitiful performance against Scotland Diego should stop threatening to resign and resign already. Let’s just get this sad chapter in Argentina’s football history behind us a.s.a.p.

@ Bobby the turd

By your reckoning that the 86 world cup is tainted then the same should be said of England's 66 win with 2 controversial goals by Mr. Hurst, the first never crossed the line, yet the gallant Mr. Hurst celebrated it nonetheless and the second was scored while scores of fans invaded the pitch. In context, no different than the hand of god goal only doubly controversial, at least Maradona skillfully skipped through 6 english players (Hodge, Beardsley, Reid, Butcher, Fenwick and Peter Shilton), but then again, perhaps they were not world class.

Not one English player honorably waived off either goal, not even the "knighted" Sir Alfred Ramsey (manager at the time). Perhaps we should ask any of the 66 team if they deserved to keep their winners medal. reffed by a referee known to favour the home team (see 68 Euro championship- had to be replayed because of this).

Rest assured that had England miraculously beaten Argentina in 86, they would have fallen at the feet of Germany, probably in a penalty shoot-out (as seems the norm in big competitive games). Oh well, maybe the could have done better in 90, or even 94 (oops, forgot that they missed the boat that year).

you celebrate your 1 World Cup, I'll celebrate my 2.

cheers and God save the queen (she'll need all the help she can get, what is she, 112 years old?)

@ Elliot.. You're right, to an extent. both teams have been under performing the last 20 year a little, however Argentina has won their continental crown in 91 and 93 and runner-up 05 and 07 (yes that pains me), runner-up @ WC 90 and olympics 96 (yes it's a watered down tournament), winner U20 WC 95, 97, 2001, 2005 and 2007, winner Olympics 04 and 08, winner confederations cup 92, runner-up 95 and 05. Argentina have only underperformed in that they are expected and capable of winning every tournament they enter.

Arguably, the 2 teams playing the most attractive football at the moment is Spain (Euro 2008 champs, Argentina (better during 2006-2007)*we'll see under Maradona (either jubilation or despair- no middle ground exists).

Don't get me wrong, I have many english players I admire(d), Rooney, Walcott is FAST!! the young Michael Owen (great player, should have started for england in 98) Gazza, class player who also had his demons (even though Vinnie Jones got the better of his joneses), Shearer.

looking forward to tomorrow.. we'll see how Argentina perform.

As a neutral observer let me just say that both Argentina and England have been irrelevant on the national stage for at least 20 years. So may I suggest a little humility from both sides?

I think Maradonna is a mess and for the AFA to choose him is a joke.

at Pancho...... aka “the peasant”

I’m glad you don’t dispute and therefore agree that 1986 is universally regarded as tainted world cup, Maradonna is a cheat, and Argentines in general are ashamed of that world cup.

Though we disagree on other issues it’s good to find some common ground.

It's a shame that Englands great footballing minds aren't great enough to coach a star studded team to success since 66 (didn't they also need help from the goal that wasn't?...Hmmm..cheat? Lack of good local great footballing minds at your disposal..Good luck to Capello.. Maybe beckham can get him a deal on an Armani suit.

BTW.. the most recent football superpower (if you could call them that) to miserably fail to qualify for a continental not to mention global competition is jolly old england.. I don't even remember the commentaters once saying "oh there's Crouch with his trademark Mr. Roboto celebration" at Euro 2008...

Your youth development has done nothing at major competitions... Viva Argentina U20 World champions 5 of the last 7.
