Maradona Has A Direct Line To God. I Am Sure Of It.

maradonagodFrom the Hand of God to his pleading with the Almighty for a win against Peru, Argentine coach Diego Armando Maradona is making a believer out of me. His two month suspension for the now infamous profanity laden press conference wasn’t enough to dampen the power of Argentina’s D10cito.

No, he was not allowed to be at the draw. In fact, he was so uninvited that FIFA actually sent him a reminder of it! Yet, even in banishment, Maradona always seems to have the last laugh.

After tripping and bumbling their way through qualification, Argentina has been bestowed yet another blessing from the skies above; this time, it is called “Group B.”

The groups toughest competition is a struggling Nigerian squad that is practically in revolt of its current coach. Not a good sign for the Eagles. Then, there are the South Koreans, who will present little challenge against the likes of Messi, Tevez, Higuain and Mascherano. And finally, as if given a chance at redemption from God himself, Maradona gets another crack at Greece; the team he last beat and scored on before being ejected from the 1994 World Cup for drug abuse, effectively closing his international footballing career.

With this drawing, it is Maradona’s road to conquer. Now the only question that remains to be answered is this; Will he be able to get it done on his own, or does God have one more blessing left for the Argentine great?

Argentina should really qualify from just about any group, but I think you’re being far too negative about their opponents.

South Korea aren’t in the same class as Argentina, but still probably one of the better teams in Pot 2. Very technical and organised. Drew with France at the last world cup.

Nigeria might be disorganised but you can’t deny the talent in their squad. They’ll struggle for consistency but they have the players to threaten top teams.

  • Dave Martinez

Tom, all points well taken, believe me. But let me break it down for you like this. South Korea, you are absolutely right – not in Argentinas class, but a fiesty bunch. Greece are a competitive team, but again, not in Argentinas class. Even if they play 10 in the back as they are known to do, Argentina would still find a way of breaking that wall down, or managing a few goals en route to a tie. Nigeria is clearly the second most dangerous team of the group, but their disorganization compounded by vocal players questioning the NFF, its tactics and decision making, and you get a team that is *gasp* more lost than even the Argies! This draw was a gift from heaven to El Diez my friend – there is not one team that SHOULD beat them. Nigeria are respectable, as are the other two teams, but none SHOULD be able to beat Maradonas side.

Don’t underestimate the ineptitude of El Diego’s managerial skill…

  • dave martinez

Nolan, spoken like a wise man. Hopefully that won’t be the lesson learned (says the argie lol)

  • Sir Hard Ass

Oh please Dave Martinez, the only thing Maradona is gonna win at the World Cup is a ticket home!

  • dave martinez

LOL Hardass. Tis the season to be a dreamer! Especially since my first love are the Yanks!!

  • Nolan

Being a Yankees fan almost makes up for being a bostero Dave…But hopefully Maradona can shut me up this summer.

Diego’s biggest opponent in Group B is… Diego himself. Sorry to use the cliché, but things are as they are.

I am strongly convinced that from this point onwards, the only chance Argentina have of getting out of that group is to follow these steps to the letter:
    1) Maradona meets players in changing room, explains tactics, gives starting eleven.
    2) Maradona is sent to fetch water by Cambiasso. Zanetti gathers teammates and says “Ok, here’s how we’re really gonna play.”
    3) Argentina wins. Maradona is held in triumph. He remains puzzled however: his players did nothing of what he told them and yet the team won 6-0.

    Rinse & repeat.

  • Cece

lol Marco. I really don’t understand why Diego hasn’t been fired yet, or better yet, why he was hired in the first place. For all of his brilliance as a player, it was rarely tactical, he mostly exploded with power and speed and few could contain him. So, i don’t get it. Any Argies want to explain?

  • Sorin

    yes, I can explain.
Our football federation is on crack for hiring him then keeping him in the position.
Diego’s worst enemy is his lack of effective training sessions for the team to mold and be fluid once they are on the field with another team… and his other worst enemy is his choice of players.
If veron is on out starting lineup this June 2010 then we can flush our dreams of a trophy down the toilet along with any other drug and paraphernalia before the group matches. Maradona has already decided to bring Veron and palermo, who havnt played in a world cup since 2002 and 1998 respectively.
And another main concern is that he does not know how to utilize messi.
If maradona was smart he would start:

    ——————-Romero——————
    —–Samuel—-Demichellis—-Gonzalo—
    —-Lucho—-Mascherano—–Cambiasso——
    Messi———Aimar—————Dimaria
    ————–Milito———————–

man… I’ve always been a fan of Crespo.

too bad he’s too old now :(

I think we will be unfair to ourselves if we underestimate any side now when we are not sure of several factors that usually come to play by crunch time, e.g injuries to top players, good preparation, form of players, referees.

For Nigeria, am sure the dust would settle in no time and all hands would be on deck remember its on the African continent and every match would be like a home game. The tactical indiscipline days are over for most since practically all the players play in Europe now. The Koreans are very technical and on a good day would defeat sides that snooze. Likewise the Greeks, they are very organised so i do not expect an easy group at all. Not even sure for Argentina.

  • Tom

@David Martinez: Yep, Argentina should go through, but then they should go through in any of the groups. I just think its a little disrespectful to the other three teams to suggest this group is a ‘blessing’ for Maradona. I see it more as a banana skin, to be honest. This is one of the more interesting groups.

  • fab

my theory is that since the local argie league is suffering money wise, grondona hired maradona to call local players and try to make a few new stars that can be bought in Europe thus bringing in more money

the only people who care about our NT is the fans and the players everything is else is all BS

  • Tony Okonkwo

I would like you to put your money were your mouth is. Nigeria is far more dangerous than people give them credit for. Watch out for the Uche brothers in La Liga btw them they have close to 6-8 goals agaist Barca and R Madrid. If Obafemi is healthy he will always bring trouble. Also note we have met the Argentines at the u-20 tournaments and the Olympic games, granted we lost but very, very close games.

If there are any weaknesses the Nigerians will find it, mark my words. Saw Maradona at the R Madrd- Almeria game sweating when Kalu Uche scored a scorcher. Believe me he will sweat more come June next year.

  • Nolan

Trust me, I fear Nigeria plenty. They are exactly the type of team that can punish an inept Argentina..

  • Cece

    cool, thanks Sorin.
