Mali won this game on a clinical Fredi Kanoute penalty kick, but it wasn’t the decisive game they’d hoped for. They needed a strong win to prepare themselves for the challenges of the upcoming Group B matches against Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria. Mali did dominate possession, but Benin defended well and kept coming up with interesting counter-attacks.
