Gold CUpdates: Honduras Ousts Canada on Iffy Penalty, US Waits Till Extra Time over Panama (Updated with Video)

By: Laurie | July 18th, 2009 | 11 Comments »

Couple of games Saturday in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Honduras 1-0 Canada

First, Honduras ousted Canada, 1-0. Anybody as shocked as I am? Anybody else have questions about the penalty? (About the 2:45 mark.)

Canada tonight is feeling hard done by the referees. I do not blame them.

USA 2-1 Panama

Okay, found the video. I caught only the last ten minutes of the game plus almost all of extra time, but somehow missed the Cooper penalty. Wow! Boot to the stomach. Way to take it for the team, Kenny! (Was the penalty what the Panamanians were upset about at the end of the match? Hmm.) Also, great strikes by both Perez and Beckerman.

The US left it till late (till extra time, to be exact) to take out Panama, but in the end they got the job done to advance to the semis.

Keep in mind here that this is technically the USA “B” squad. With the departure of Charlie Davies to his new club, Sochaux, isn’t everybody from the USA Confederations Cup A squad now gone? I think so.

Panama got the first strike in first half injury time thanks to Blas Perez. But USA’s Kyle Beckerman struck back early in the second half. The game stood at 1-1 through regular time, but in the end, USA’s Kenny Cooper won a penalty in the second period of extra time. He converted, and a tired Panama couldn’t come back.

USA now face Honduras yet again in the semis, on July 23. They beat them 2-0 in the group stages, but that was largely on the energy of second-half subs Benny Feilhaber and Charlie Davies. Will they have the same spark now that Feilhaber and Davies have gone home?

Laurie this isn’t the USA B Squad. It’s the C squad.

Stalteri was clearly pulling Martinez down. Not as shocking as Team USA’s penalty.

‘Stalteri was clearly pulling Martinez down.’??
Nope.
And definitely not from the ref’s angle.
Maybe it was clear when you posted the comment at 6:42 a.m.!

Laurie, hear anything more about Conrad’s concussion?

Also, I can’t find a decent clip of the actual impact.
I can only see just thereafter when he looks like he had a date with Mike Tyson.

Poor, poor man.

btw – Nice strike from Beckerman. Didn’t know he had it in him.

Johnny, all I’ve got so far is this:

Defender Jimmy Conrad took a shot in the face from Perez late in the first half, coming up bloodied, and had to leave the game. Conrad suffered a concussion, though he was responsive when at the hospital.

Kind of looks like Martinez got that shot off without a hitch wren.

Canada is a bit of an enigma ultimately. They haven’t beaten Honduras in just over 2 years now. They’ve been knocked out of Gold Cup twice now by their own inability to clinically finish offensive attacks after dubious (non)calls. Face it, they just arent good enough yet

It was not a foul. It was a clear handball. Good call by the ref.

I agree about Holden, he needs to be called up to camp for the rest of the qualifiers. I’m almost positive that he’s had a big part in most of the goals we’ve scored in this tournament. Hopefully some teams are looking at him for this upcoming european season. He’d be a project for them for sure, but he’d still get reserve games more than likely so he’d still be playing.
