FIFA World Rankings March 2008

The magic numbers are out. Every month, FIFA do complicated mathematical things on a big supercomputer and then carefully rank every national team. Either that or they just make it up over a few beers.

Whatever their method, there’s been very little movement this month. Maybe the supercomputer was on the fritz, maybe the beer wasn’t flowing. More likely, there just hasn’t been a great deal of action since the February rankings came out.

Argentina still lead the way, closely followed by Brazil and then Italy. The the only movers in the top 20 are Ghana, down one from joint 14th to solo 15th. But at least Andre Dede Ayew is still popular.

Honduras climb up the top 50 a little, jumping seven places to 43rd. But the biggest climbers are Guyana, who move up 19 places to 113th. I have no idea why.

Dropping like a stone is Cuba, who fell 24 places to 112th. Thud. The Cuban U-23 team defecting to Florida mid CONCACAF Under-23 Tournament probably came too late to cause the drop, but it didn’t help any either.

Probably most disappointed will be Jamaica, who dropped 13 places and out of the top 100 to 103rd.

Looks like Grondona is the one who’s been bringing the beer lately…
