FIFA World Rankings: April 2009

By: Daryl | April 9th, 2009 | 14 Comments »

We haven’t done a FIFA World Rankings post since back December 2008, mostly because it’s all been much of a muchness. Spain ruled the roost, everyone else didn’t and the top 20 barely moved. There was no news to report. And so we didn’t.

In April 2009 Spain are still top, but the big news is that they’re more top than anyone has ever been ever. Spain have been #1 for 10 straight months, and their current lead of 367 points over #2 team Germany is the biggest lead any team has had since the rankings began in 1993. Go Spain.

Other news to report: Brazil has leapfrogged World Cup 2006 winners Italy to take 4th place, Fabio Capello has pushed England up two places to 7th, France rejoins the top 10 and Portugal are slowly slowly slipping from respectability to mediocrity. Go Carlos Queiroz.

Big movers are Bosnia and Togo, who’ve jumped 20 and 26 places respectively after some impressive World Cup qualifying results.

The full rankings are of course available at the FIFA website, but spread out over five pages. So after some epic cutting and pasting using only patience, coffee and Microsoft Paint, we can bring you the full rankings table – featuring every FIFA member nation on the planet – below:

Wow, that’s pretty impressive.

Ps, doesn’t “St. Vincent and the Grenadines” sound like a band?

@ Weston

True! Although when I hear it, I feel it’s someone calling out cantina drinks too.

You’ve got to feel for those teams at the bottom – zero points means they haven’t had so much as a draw in four years. And Central African Republic has one draw that’s about to expire. That’s a hell of a dry spell. They should really play each other, so someone gets some points. Zero-point teams, pair off.

“Portugal are slowly slowly slipping from respectability to mediocrity. Go Carlos Queiroz.”

Sad, but true. Jose Mourinho, WE NEED YOU!

Another interesting fact: The Czech Republic was ranked 2nd in the world on the eve of the 2006 World Cup. Three years later they’re in 12th and it doesn’t look like they’ll be in South Africa next summer.

My how the mighty fall.

Spain No. 1

Spain is amazing. No envy. A worthy leader at long last.

England will be interesting to watch.

With Germany, it seems that anything is possible: a remarkable DOWN or UP.
A lot of young talent in second line, waiting and hungry.

Also interesting: How will Netherlands, Italy and Russia fare ?
I’ve got a hunch that Italy will recover in due course of time.
Who talks about France? Well, well … You never know.
