FIFA World Player of the Year 2008 Shortlists

It’s definitely awards season. So far the FIFPro World Player of the Year has gone to Cristiano Ronaldo and the 30 man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or has been released.

Not to be outdone by their rival gong-givers (is it just me, or are there far too many awards now?) FIFA has finally announced its shortlist(s) for the FIFA 2008 World Player of the Year award. Read on to see who made the cut.

FIFA Men’s World Player of the Year 2008 Shortlist

Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo), Sergio Aguero (Argentina), Andrei Arshavin (Russia), Michael Ballack (Germany), Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Iker Casillas (Spain), Deco (Portugal), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon), Cesc Fabregas (Spain), Steven Gerrard (England), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden), Andres Iniesta (Spain), Kaka (Brazil), Frank Lampard (England), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Franck Ribery (France), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), John Terry (England), Fernando Torres (Spain), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Netherlands), David Villa (Spain) and Xavi (Spain).

FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year 2008 shortlist:
Nadine Angerer (Germany), Shannon Boxx (USA), Cristiane (Brazil), Daniela (Brazil), Marta (Brazil), Birgit Prinz (Germany), Christine Sinclair (Canada), Kelly Smith (England), Hope Solo (USA) and Ingvild Stensland (Norway).

Once again, think we can say C-Ron is favourite for the Men’s World Player of the Year Award. He’s basically going to win everything, you know that right? Good news is that – barring some major surgery – C-Ron’s not going to win the Women’s World Player of the Year Award.

National team captains and coaches will now vote (question that fascinate me: If Diego Maradona is confirmed in time to vote, will he favour son-he-never-had Leo Messi, or son-in-law he might one day have Sergio Aguero?) and a shorter shortlists of three will be announced in December before the winners of each award are announced in January.

I agree that Christiano Ronaldo is a good player and yes he scored 42 goals, but he hardly performs against good teams such as (Barcelona, Arsenal and AC Milan). Lionel Messi on the other hand performs in every match, big or small. He has a better strike rate than Ronaldo and should and will become the next World Player of the year. whoever said that Messi has no flare or magic should google Lionel Messi and see for yourself.

obviously casillas deserves it
but since the award is biased against goalies, he probably won’t win
he was the only player to prove himself to be the best in all competitions
cristiano ronaldo did nothing in euro 2008

anyways fifa WORLD player… isn’t that based on country competitions?
cristiano ronaldo can’t even come in the top 20 if it’s purely based on euro 2008

If any goalkeeper should get it, it should be Buffon. Casillas is not all that good, he is over rated. look back at last years champions league and see for yourself.

C.Ronaldo is the best player in the world, the way he plays football is entirely different than the top players, he has full control over the ball, he has reached to a point that not many players can, SEE GUYS as a winger it’s not easy to score goals, he can dribble, pass, 2 footed, can hit free kicks and all that comes, he is diffintely an amazing palyer… he desreve the honor and this year he is going to be the top scorer in Premier league again,,,, even he was injured and missed first few matches but he caught up with top scorer… Messi is a great player too but he has to do something AMAZING and very noticeable to wint he trophy,, NO OFFENSE to any fans….I love football and Love Cr7 style of footy…

the person who said that christiano is a midfielder is wrong, he was playing the forward role, that is why he scored so many goals. Rooney was more of a midfielder last season. not because he scored so many goals means that he must get the award. he scored the most goals but he also took the most shots.

Moe you got it all wrong. Messi can shoot well and hard. He can pass forward (while C-ron usually passes backward). He has been injured for the end of last season and for a few months and look now… who has had the better season now? From your comment it looks like you’ve only saw 2 games or so with Messi in it. Also you have to exclude the beginning of last years season. Which would be excluding several of CR7’s goals. Also look at the shots by CR7 this and how many were on target and how many were goals. Compare it to Messi’s… Messi doesn’t do nonsense shots and when he shoots he rarely gets it off target. Messi was 2nd top score or somewhere there in the CL, yet he was injured for some part of it. If Barca with Ronaldinho and Messi were playing against Man Utd the result would’ve been different.

Based on achievement during the year, CR7 had to win it, is he a fantastic player? absolutely. was he the best? IMHO, no. He was part of the MU team that had stellar performances from everyone for the whole year. Could MU still beat Chelsea, Arsenal, liverpool w/o CR7, yes. Did he disappear during big games, yes. How many PK’s did he take that he didn’t win (helps your stats when your the designated PK taker, remember when tevez earned a pk at the end of the game and could have had his hat trick, CR& pushed him saide so that he could take it, selfish). Without Scholes, tevez, rooney, etc. late game heroics, MU would not have achieved the double.

Messi has a greater impact @ Barcelona and the National team and involves and creates more for his teammates than CR7, does he take all the PKs, no, he celebrates his teams achievements more than his. Had he remained injury free for the season, Barcelona would have done better and his impressive stats would be more so.

This is a team game, and a heavily marketed game. is it good business to have CR7 win it, absolutely- he is a much better version of David Beckham (more skilled, prettier) from a marketing perspective (has a huge female following- I doubt Tevez has such a strong female following). With Berba now @ MU and playing a traditional strikers role, CR7 will not have the same type of year as he will be tasked more with feeding Berba and Rooney the ball and the EPL is more competitive this year.

Just like Beckham, CR7 will probably get more involved in his endorsements and Rock star life and become more fashion over function (then SAF will sell him to Real for $$$$$, laughing all the way to the bank).

Messi will win 08-09 BD’O. (if he stays fit)

C. Ronaldo without question is deserving. Messi will never win this award for a number of reasons.

1. Next year Zlatan Ibra….ich will win.
2. He is injury prone.
3. So many other freaky young footballing talents will be coming into the spotlight.
4. Would it kill Messi to use a little hair gel? Buy a new suit?

However this does not mean Messi will not continue to be a very capable player.

Apparently handsomeness, hair gel and wardrobe are requirements for the Bolon D’Or according to Manuel and zephania.

Sad,

too bad for Ribery, Tevez and all the ugly blokes of futbol, that regardless of talent may never win. LOL

Mr. or Mrs. Pancho

I never said it was a beauty competition, I was giving Messi free advice as a stylist and high fashion expert. Normally I get paid handsomely for this service.

The mere mention of players like ribery or tevez as potential winners of the Ballon D’Or speaks volumes as to your understanding (or lack thereof) of the game.

tevez? tevez? cmon! this is a blog for serious discussion of football.

Ha ha Will – that was funny. Almost as funny as people saying Ibrahimovic was in line for any awards. I see now that Messi is bookies favourite for world player of the year award, what a joke if they don’t give it to ronaldo. Messi is a legend but he didn’t achieve as much as ronaldo last year, in fact didn’t even come close. Travesty if ronaldo doesn’t get it..
