FIFA U20 Update: Not Your Usual Suspects.
The kiddie quarterfinals have arrived and, although Germany, Italy and Brazil have again found their way into the quarters of a major tournament, the rest of the participants hardly reads like a who’s who of international football. In fact this is something of a who ain’t in big footballing terms – the matchup between Costa Rica and United Arab Emirates says it all, really. Is this a reflection of the participants at a personnel level? Quite possibly, but that does set up the perfect opportunity for a tournament rife with Cinderellas.
And it didn’t stop the gods from setting up a finger-linkin’ match between Brazil and Germany.
The hosts (Egypt) are out. The young Spaniards are out. Nigeria, a typical stalwart at these levels, are out. Even upstarts Paraguay, both at youth and senior levels, have found themselves on the transatlantic flight back home.
The quarterfinal bracket reads like such:

So while being great at senior level doesn’t necessarily translate to the senior stage and vice-versa, it would appear the lack of big names at the tournaments has translated to a lack of big names in the quarters.
***
Brazil, predictably, put in a dandy of an individual attacking performance in the Uruguayan box, and the boys from the country south really never had a chance.
This is what you’d expect of Brazilian technique and attacking know-how – nothing more, nothing less.
***
Bjorn Kopplin wins hero status for the Round of 16 with two goals and an assist in a 3-2 victory, with the winner coming in the 92nd on the counter down to ten men.
***
The means of result, penalties, in seeing Hungary over the Czech Republic were pedestrian; Mate Kiss was not.

The winner of this tournament will come from the Brazil vs Germany match up, such a shame it wasn’t the final. I don’t know why many disregard this tournament, and this is directed at England. Many think Germany sucks, but they hold the continental titles at U-17, U-19, U-21 levels. The Germans have reformed their football structures, and are seeing the benefits. They are missing 25 players, but this was no excuse not to perform and reach the 1/4 finals.
Why is Wilshere at home playing in the Reserves and Carling Cup instead of playing against the best in the world of his age? Italy are also missing some key players, but this was no excuse to not perform. Give this German generation 5 years, many will be in the full team and Germany will be back in the big time.
Also, the German left back, Kopplin, what a player, he is going to be the new Lahm, where are England young talents?

Italy to beat Hungary.
Korea to beat Ghana.
Korea to beat Italy ala 2002.
The other side of the table will be….. Brazil over Germany (but I really can’t tell)
and the other bracket will surely no matter who wins.
KOREA TO WIN THE WHOLE SH-BANG, LET’S GO ASIAN PRIDE.

Where are Englands young talents? All in the Arsenal reserves…

Hoyte played, and he sucked in the one game he played. Shame on Arsenal and England not taking this key development phase serious enough.

That last goal by Germany was BS… that Kopp kid fouled a Nigerian player halfway through the field and then scored. The foul was not called, yet it was so obvious that half the Nigerian team was caught waiting for that whistle. Terrible end to the game, at least in my opinion. Germany and Nigeria deserved to work it out in extra time.
And why no highlights from the Egypt-Costa Rica game? That was one hell of a game!

That´s right Jose!! Go Costa Rica!!

Uruguay had a fantastic second half but you’re right, the score was too large to overcome.
