Brazil’s Anderson is a Good Guy

By: Laurie | July 30th, 2008 | 11 Comments »

This is one of those stories that makes my maternal area go all soft and squishy.

Seems Anderson, the Brazilian ManU guy, absolutely made the life of a twelve-year-old fan in Singapore.

Nishok, the fan, left his friends behind to go watch the Brazilian Olympic team train. Toward the end of the session, he broke into a song about his favorite player, Anderson — one that Manchester United fans may be familiar with:

‘Anderson-son-son, he’s better than Kleberson…’*

(*Full words and video of the song at the bottom. I wonder if this kid sings the whole thing at home, and if so, if his mom washes his mouth out with soap? Not that it’s not a great song. As far as football chants go. Just that I don’t think it was conceived as a song/chant for a twelve-year-old.)

But the song got Anderson’s attention.

First he waved at Nishok. A while later, he pointed towards the boy while sitting down and talking to a team-mate.

Then came the unexpected as his team-mates trooped off the field. Anderson stood up, and headed towards a stunned Nishok. With a swing of his arm, he threw up a boot. It was caught by someone next to Nishok, but Anderson signalled for it to be passed to him instead.

Then, he threw the remaining boot.

And it didn’t end there.

As Anderson warmed down at the side of the pitch, he signalled for the Brazilian media officer to invite Nishok down from the grandstand on to the field, to have a chat with him.

For the second time, Nishok was the envy of the 500 plus spectators, as he chatted with the player for close to five minutes. At one point, Brazil coach Dunga even helped him to snap a photograph.

Nishok, who plays football with his friends once a week, said: ‘His first words to me were, ‘How are you, my friend?’ ‘Then, he asked me to sing him the song again, so that he could hear the lyrics clearly.’

For good measure, Anderson also signed on the pair of boots.

It’s almost enough to make one forget past stories involving a Travelodge, English language learning and an extreme lack of social skills.

Almost.

Curious about the Anderson song? Here it is. And if you can’t understand the words? I’m all about enlightening people today, so here those are too.

Anderson, son son. He’s better than Kleberson. Anderson, son son. He’s our midfield magician. To the left, to the right. To the samba beat tonight. He is class with a brass. And he s***s on Fabregas!

LATE ADD: Reader Dylan gives us the video that shows Nishok actually singing the song. His mother must be every bit as proud as I was when I heard my own twelve-year-old son sing AC/DC’s “Big Balls.” (But my son didn’t do it on international television. That I know of.)

He is class with the brass?!!!

It is, I believe, he is class with the pass. You have to say class in a scally Manchester accent for it to work.

Laurie, I know about this story longer than you. :P I come from Singapore and you know the media here was all excited that the Brazil Olympic football squad was here last week (they left for Vietnam the day after a friendly against a local selection here on Monday). I think it’s because Ronaldinho was among those who came. After the Vietnam trip, they will be off to Beijing for the Olympics. It’s all part of getting used to the climate before the big event itself.

Anyhow, I remembered the version I read is slightly different from this. But still about the same.

By the way, based on also what I read, coach Dunga imposed a strict regime on the squad when they were here. The only places the squad have been to - the stadium for training and the team hotel.

Sheps and Nic, I just copied the words from the text beside the YouTube video. I am happy to leave the translation of the words of drunken Englishmen to those more qualified than I. Pass, brass, whichever you choose is fine by me.

Diana, given what we know about what the Brazilian boys can get up do, a strict hotel-to-training-to-hotel regimen sounds like an excellent idea. :-)

Dylan, excellent video! He does sing it word for word, doesn’t he? Too funny.

Aja: Yes. What’s funny is that I adore Patrice Evra. And his role in that story kind of makes me laugh and creeps me out at the same time.

Definitely, Laurie. Given of Ronaldinho’s reputation especially during his final days at Barcelona…yeah. When I read about what Dunga implemented during their stay here, I was like thinking - ‘Thank goodness!’.

if Zidane, Juninho or Rivaldo gave me the kind of treatment that Anderson gave to the kid, i’d probably cry too.

Interesting what this says about the worldwide exposure of Man U. The fact that random people in Singapore know the various songs sort of seems like the whole “branding in Asia” thing is working.

Am I misreading this one? Awesome work by Anderson, though.

Andrew, Man U has always been among the most supported club here in Singapore. Apart from Liverpool. The Premier League has always been very popular here all along.
