Australia Serious About Hosting World Cup 2018
Australia are about to step up and get serious with their bid to host World Cup 2018. There are apparently big talks going on to get everyone on the same page, before launching a $10 million (Aussie dollars) campaign to bring the World Cup Down Under.
There are a few problems to overcome though. The bid would require the co-operation of the Australian Football League (Aussie rules not the A-League) and the National Rugby League, who would need to alter their season to make some stadiums available. Both codes could argue that they’re more popular than soccer in Australia, so it could all depend on how keen they are to help out.
But it’s definitely time for Australia to get a World Cup. The A-League is growing in leaps and bounds, with the Finals (playoffs) and the Australian national team both attracting good size crowds. Check out the healthy looking crowd at the Minor Semifinal between Queensland Roar and Sydney FC last weekend. And the national team has apparently had crowds of 75,000 and 95,000 for recent games, figures that easily stand up to any other nations. Hosting the big event is only going to increase that enthusiasm.
