Artur Boruc Handed A Very Long International Siesta

By: Chris | August 23rd, 2008 | 8 Comments »

No big surprise: while on international duty some players - the Polish trio of Artur Boruc, Dariusz Dudka and Radoslaw Majewski - decided to break curfew and have a drunken night on the town. Luckily they were only with Polish journalists, not prostitutes like the Czechs, so it wasn’t that embarrassing. Though it was after a 1-0 loss to Ukraine, so they probably could’ve picked a better time.

Big surprise: Artur Boruc’s international career during Leo Beenhakker’s tenure is effectively over.

“Leo Beenhakker said that as long as he remains the coach this threesome will not be called up.”

Goalkeeper is one of the few positions Poland has quality depth at, but Borus was far and away Poland’s best player at the Euros and, if you don’t follow Scottish football, he was damn near a revelation. Still wondering why he hasn’t made the leap to a big club this summer.

(And not to forget the other two, but Boruc has been so integral to the squad lately - not sure where they would’ve been without him this summer - his dismissal is just a much bigger deal at the moment.)

Of course, this is what’s being said. Plenty of coaches say/do things out of initial anger or for the purpose of making a point. Will Leo last the entire World Cup qualifying run with these three on his shit list? Let’s just say I wouldn’t pack away those Boruc Poland kits just yet….

That quote is from a tabloid and not surprisingly it’s bullshit. Beenhakker hasn’t decided yet how long they’ll be suspended, even whether they’ll miss the first two WC qualifiers.. He says everyone will find out early next week (from an interview on sport.pl).

I love Boruc, he’s always good for some entertainment, be it drunken nights out or taunting Rangers fans

Where the hell did you get this from? Making up stories to get readers is a common thing but I never thought that I’d find one here. The 3 were banned for the Slovakia and San Marino matches cat completely, no one is retarded enough to kick out the best goalkeeper from the squad. Why don’t you read up on what you writing, instead of reading the headline and making a whole story out of it.

Relax zaraza and Alek. The article Chris quoted is from The Guardian, which I would hardly call “tabloid” in the English media.

Not only that, but the Guardian article is actually quoting a press release from the Polish FA’s website (www.pzpn.pl) so I think (I think!) they do check their sources before-hand.

As for the PZPN spokesman quote that indeed comes from a tabloid, but as Chris said we probably shouldn’t put too much weight on it. Likely, Beenhakker’s just making a point with the rest of the team, so after they pay a fine and apologize for their behaviour (”we won’t do it do again” etc.), Boruc & friends will be welcomed back with open arms.
