Alfredo Di Stéfano Gets a Statue
Legendary Real Madrid striker Alfredo Di Stéfano was honoured with a statue this weekend, unveiled by a who’s who of footballing dignitaries, including - of course - Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini. The Argentinean born striker, know as Saeta rubia (the Blond Arrow) played for River Plate in Argentina, Millionairos in Colombia and most famously for Real Madrid in Spain. From 1953 to 1964 he won eight La Ligas and five European Cups with the famous Real tea, and scored more goals than I can count.
And how about this for a great speech at the unveiling of the statue. The 81 year old said:
“When you look at the statue, you’ll see my arms are high in the air and wide open. This mirrors the embrace of gratitude that I’d like to extend to you all. Thank you so much. I want to express my most sincere gratitude to you all for being with me on a day I’ll never forget. It’s too much. I’m moved by all you’ve said. I don’t deserve it, but I’ll have to accept it.”
Legend.
Here’s some collected archive footage of the great man in action. It’s ruined more than a little by the Bryan Adams soundtrack, but some great moments in here.
