2009 Confederations Cup – ESPN and BBC TV Schedules
I’ve got a good feeling about the 2009 Confederations Cup. Sure, it’s not the most important tournament in the world. It’s really just a World Cup 2010 test run, and no one’s going to be too upset if they don’t win it. But there are still plenty of reasons to get interested.
Here’s a quick reminder of how it all works: It’s an eight team tournament featuring the World Cup hosts, the World Cup holders and then the six confederation champions. Here’s what the groups look like.
Group A: South Africa, Spain, Iraq, New Zealand
Group B: USA, Italy, Brazil, Egypt
Any tournament featuring Spain, Italy and Brazil is worth watching. That’s just a fact. USA fans will get to see their team face some serious opposition x 3, while underdog can go ahead and cheer for Iraq and New Zealand.
The tournament runs from June 14th to June 28th, and if you’re US or UK based then you’ll have no trouble finding it on TV. Here are the schedules:
2009 Confederations Cup, ESPN TV schedule for US viewers.
ESPN are showing every game live. Except for the Iraq vs New Zealand group game, which we can forgive them for. Games will be shown across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN360.com (which is a great little service, provided you have the right internet provider). All kickoff time are US Eastern, all programming starts five minutes before kickoff (so you’ll have to do your own previews).

And there you have it. Nice to see this accessible on both sides of the Atlantic. US viewers will get an idea of how ESPN plans to cover WC2010.
Outside of the US and UK, this document should tell you which broadcaster has the rights in your country (it’s 17 pages long, but divided by continent and in alphabetical order). Also, if anyone has links to full TV schedules from any other countries, please share in the comments.
Little disappointed in the group divisions……USA gets screwed, but moreover, we don’t get to see Iraq-USA. How great of a game would that be?!

I’d love to see Mexico get in on this action next time around. They do better than the U.S. against non-CONCACAF opposition.
Still, I’m happy that the U.S. gets the hard group, the USMNT likely won’t get past the group stage but will get some great experience out of it. They’ll be facing some of the best Europe, South America and Africa can offer, so they’ll be able to exposed to the biggest threats come 2010!
Does anyone know Univision’s tv schedule for the tourney? Its like 12 days away and I still cannot find any information from them.
Giuseppe Rossi gets a start against the US on day 1, anyone?

@christopher: According to the Direct TV listings, Univision’s not carrying the opener (Iraq v. SA), but they are carrying the NZ v. Spain match. My guess is that they’re only planning on covering the matches that they feel Latinos care most about, and probably the later rounds as well.
I think it should be an interesting tournament. I posted an article on the
Confederations Cup preview. Will be watching this for sure, and apparently all teams are sending their best players there rather than fielding experimental teams. Should be great to watch a Spain v. Brazil final.
What about a Canadian channel? Anyone know? I have searched but cannot find.

while the usa keeps losing to third world teams like italy soccer will never amount to anything in the USA – unlike third world countries they are starved for any kind of sport at all!

Italy? Third world? Get a book and learn how to read.
nope Americans only like sports that you don’t have to run too much. because they all fat from fast food. americans rather watch war than sports.
Dejavu, you make no sense at all. We rather watch war than sports? What the heck do you mean by that? You do not make any sense….How about you come to the U.S. and see for yourself. Were all fat from fast food? Right…sure…….Apparently you never been to the United States. Fast food is everywhere. Get an education.
Andrew, please don’t embarrass urself by saying soccer is a third world sport
if u don’t have a clue in sports, then just go entertain urself with some other sport like whatever crap u guys play in the us NHL, cricket, golf or whatever.
second of all u know that car u shit urself when u see like Lamborghini, Ferrari whatever, u know the cars ur country doesn’t even dream of producing something similar to well newsflash they come from the country u call “third world” ITALY
who cares if the US doesnt make it lets face it we suck at soccer. and im tired of the commentators for the games making excuses for the loses. face it the US will never be good at soccer until it becomes a game played in the streets like it is in all of the power house countries. we are completely out classed lets face it
Third world teams??? You mean like Holland (where Shell Oil comes from), England, Spain, Germany, France, etc etc. If that’s third world, I’d rather be there (not to mention the rest of Europe which is the cradle of Western Civilization, and the US is just their transplanted uncouth cousins).

Actually, soccer IS played in the streets in the US.
The problem with US soccer is not lack of talent, but lack of a good infrastructure for finding, recruiting and developing talent. Most US soccer coaches wouldn’t know a good player if he kicked the coach in the ass. They look for physical condition (who can run faster longer) because they don’t know how to recognize skill and talent. Skill and talent are largely innate; conditioning is just that – a physical state you can “condition” your body into reaching.

I am an avid viewer of GOLTV, and between the horns blowing and you’re SNOOZER commentators, I don’t care to watch ESPN soccer broadcasts! The one commentator acts like he’s the coach saying what the team “needs to do” and has a very “better than” attitude. They don’t talk about players’ backgrounds/accomplishments, stats NOTHING!! You’re commentators are the biggest SNOOZERS in the soccer wrold! Sorry, but they are. It really takes away from the “beautiful game”. I’m a 50 year old woman from the US, and it seems that I know more about all of these teams than the commentators. Let me know if you need any suggestions because you’re going to loose your viewing soccer audience if they have to listen to incompetents! Sad, but true. I know you guys are trying, but it’s just not cutting it for the avid soccer fan/viewer.

I’d be willing to wager a small bet on Iraq getting out of the group, but no further.
