World Cup Round Up: Spain Sleeps, Baby Boom Bust in Germany, Young Yanks
It is interesting to see how fans from different countries react when it comes to international football. In Scotland right now there is a lot of nervous excitement ahead of their big clash with Italy. In England there is a lot of doom and gloom as their team could be on the outside looking in during Euro 2008. And in Spain? Well, there is evidently a lot of indifference even as their national team prepares for a vital game against Sweden.
Remember how we were told that the 2006 World Cup would lead to a baby boom in Germany? It turns out that it did not. According to the official statistics, 800 fewer babies were born in the first six months of 2007 than there were during the same time period during 2006. I guess scoring was down at the World Cup after all.
Leo Beenhakker has extended his contract with Poland and could be on the sidelines if they qualify for 2010. He did a nice job with Trinidad and Tobago last go around.
Colombia is focused on scoring goals in their upcoming qualifiers even without the help of an angel.
Everyone loves the idea of England hosting the 2018 World Cup, right? Well, everyone except UEFA boss Michel Platini who needs a bit of convincing about the matter. I hear that a free lunch of fish and chips might help. At least that would win me over. I’m starving right now…
There is a lot on the line when France plays Ukraine next week, including the career of Lilian Thuram. The Thinking Footballer says he will hang up his international boots if France does not qualify for Euro 2008. He doesn’t owe his country a thing. He’s been great for years.
There are a lot of young players playing for Guus Hiddink and Russia and as a result he thinks qualifying for Euro 2008 would be a nice bonus. Perhaps he is right, but I’d say with the way things stand right now anything less than qualifying would be a disappointment.
I have food in my fridge older than some of the young players slated to play for the United States against South Africa. Even though he is young, it is about time that Jozy Altidore earns a cap.
