World Cup Final Match Review & Highlights: Netherlands 0-1 Spain

fabregas

Honestly, it wasn’t a great game to watch. Not unless you’re a big fan of seeing free kicks awarded. So I don’t have too much to say about this game that hasn’t already been said. The basic facts are that there were a lot of yellow cards (nine for the Netherlands, five for Spain) a lot of missed chances, a couple of very good saves, one red card for Johnny Heitinga (second yellow) and one extra time goal from Andres Iniesta to win the game.

The Netherlands can consider themselves unlucky that Robben didn’t finish when one on one with Iker Casillas, and possibly unlucky that Heitinga got a second booking for what didn’t look like too much of a tangle with Iniesta. If that hadn’t happened, we’d probably have gone to penalty kicks. But it did happen, and then Iniesta scored, and so the World Cup goes to Spain.

Selected highlights and links to blog posts for further discussion below…

We should have known this was going to be an odd game when a pitch invader (possibly Jimmy Jump) came within inches of getting a hat on the World Cup trophy before kickoff:

And we knew this was going to be rough when Nigel de Jong gave Xabi Alonso a studs-up chest tattoo in the first half:

It was 0-0 after 90 minutes, and I still argue that the key incident was the sending off of Johnny Heitinga early in the second half of extra time:

Because just a few minutes later (and with only four minutes until penalty kicks) substitute Cesc Fabregas set up Andres Iniesta for the winner:

Extended highlights of the rest of the game…

All of which =

Congratulations to Spain, World Cup winners 2010.

Can somebody explain what the Dutch were complaining about in regards to the goal? The commentators in that clip seem to be talking about some sort of foul, but I've now seen it numerous times and can not see anything whatsoever. Can anyone point it out?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/WSG5MFNWCXAXDLW5U2T432LJGA Phil

Just sour grapes, they knew that was the winner.

  • ramzi

“The Netherlands can consider themselves unlucky that Robben didn’t finish when one on one with Iker Casillas, and possibly unlucky that Heitinga got a second booking”

At Spain, they can considers themselves lucky as well that Xabi is still alive.

(And I think Spain wasted more chances than that Robben opportunity).

In brief, the better team won. Hopefully the Netherlands come back to common sense after this game. The worst game they played since decades. Subbing Cruyff the artist by Van Bommel the butcher is not really an upgrade, and it won't win them titles.

  • dye_go

Aaaah… I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, the way they played that entire game…

    lol thanks.

before the goal by Spain there was a series of wrong referee decisions. The foul taken by the Dutch hit on a Spanish Player, and straight to a corner. Instead the referee pointed an out.

Shortly after, the Spanish commited a foul when they almost lose the ball to the Dutch, that where pressing full court by that time and almost stole it. Again, the referee gave nothing and Spain managed to get the ball on to counter attack.

The goal was not an offside, but I think that the reason of the complains where those series of wrong referee decisions that led Spain to counter attack.

  • Theo1973

I couldnt agree more and to add, Spain was pushed all the way to reach the final. vs Uruguay, vs Portugal (offside goal Villa) , vs Germany (yellow to Mueller so he couldnt play , ungiven foul to Oezil and red to Ramos), vs Holland (ungiven foul to Puyol and red, foul and then goal for Spain). I dont expect the fans of Spain to agree with those facts but it is the luck of justice that creates the violence and not the lack of acceptance of losing from a better team. Plus that if we have to remember 5 matches from this World cup, it will none from Spain which says a lot. Pointless passing boring , making someone yawn game isnt the reason why football is the king of sports. Definately Spain didnt entertain us, but Germany did. Young players, fresh with simple and fast football , were the true winners of this Cup.

“I dont expect the fans of Spain to agree with those facts”

Now that you used the word “facts” in your sentence, no one can argue about it anymore.

  • http://www.footballmood.com/ Ramzi

I think the “series of wrong referee decisions.” started long time before that. Remember, the Dutch finished the 1st half eleven with players on the field.

The Dutch lost the world cup because they didn't win a corner. That tells enough about how far they deserved it.

  • Theo1973

OK Ramzi ,now I am convinced; Spain was the best team. Cheap technique Ramzi but you made no real comment to what I said , obviously , you have nothing to say against it. Have a nice day.

What game were you watching? Yes Robben should have shown more composure with his two chances when clean through and they cut Spain open at will at times near the end with the pace of Robben and Elia. That said, Holland could and possibly should have been down to 9 by the start of the second half. I like Howard Webb but he bottled it with those two decisions. Holland under performed and failed to turn up last night as a footballing team. I guess if I was Dutch and they won, I might not have complained but last night was a dismal advert for football and that was such a diservice to the good people of South Africa and the watching billions. Shame. The right team won, thankfully.

  • Theo1973

A team that shouldnt be in the final at first place though. That is whats all about.

  • http://www.footballmood.com/ Ramzi

I am having a nice day already. But thanx for your kind wish.

In fact I don't need to say anything against it as its bias speaks volume. But now that you cant even figure it out its enough to point out one example (the most recent one):

    - vs Holland (ungiven foul to Puyol and red, foul and then goal for Spain).

Regardless of the validity of that sequence, Even Seedorf after the first half was wondering how is it possible that none of the Dutch players was suspended. If we want to start debating about “what woulda shoulda coulda have happened if”, then you better takeoff the orange eyeglasses and see the full image. The two holding midfielders should have been suspended before the time ticks 30 minutes. One of them was close to commit a crime murder.

And for your info, I am more a Dutch fan -on international level- than a fan of Spain. In my preview before the game and my brief article after the game I mentioned why the Dutch must not win a world cup by playing this way. Thankfully, they didnt. Thats for their own best.

  • Theo1973

I clicked “like” to show you the difference between Holland and Spain in mentalitys concern. Yes Seedorf said that cause he is dutch and he will show level and respect no matter what. I am more than sure that we wouldnt see such a positive attitude if the case was vise versa. Still though, my dear, there is not even a single match from Spain that you will remember , you or anyone else, plus that Spain was pushed all the way with Josephs blessings and they shouldnt be in the final at first place. Defeat is acceptable , the luck of justice , I am afraid not.

The main (and probably only) message of the last night's game was that violence had no place in football. In this tournament, the USA team started promoting such kind of a football, and the Netherlands joined this club of “desperados” in their final two games. Whenever there is a huge gap between ambition and capabilities, violence gets in as a quick and dirty solution. Luckily, Ghana pacified the USA, and Spain did the same to the Netherlands, although I hoped the Netherlands would have been done away with in the game against Uruguay already; van Bommel should have gotten the red card there and then, and maybe the game would have gone in a very different direction. So much about woulda, shoulda, coulda…

  • AScAr

It was a corner…. Right before Iniesta scored Elia or Sneiders freekick dont no wich one it was Netherlands should have gotten a corner, but Web said it was a goal kick, AND it clearly was a corner….

  • Theo1973

I agree David , none of this would happen if Spain wasnt pushed. I am not talking about last nights game but the whole Cup. Here in Switzerland (known for not liking the germans) we believe that Germany played the best and are the true winners. The truth must be said. We have also eyes and we saw what happened. For those who dont believe there is the Youtube to face the “FACTS”

  • JoseJosue

The Dutch have to thank their lucky stars for the officiating last night. A fair referee would have had sent off Puyol and maybe Iniesta toward the end of the game, but by then that same fair referee would have had Holland down to 9 men for most of the game and Spain would have been 3-0 up.

  • Theo1973

Thing is that Spain shouldnt be in the final and we wouldnt have to talk about it. Kindly check the youtube and see for yourself how Spain was pushed all the way to this final. From the offside goal (Villa) against Portugal till yesterdays game. The history has written that Spain won the cup the same way that Argentina did in 86 but we still talk about the hand (=one meter nothing got a header from a goalie who used his stretched arm as well) as it was simply unfair. Thats the issue here. Cant you people get it? It is the how that matters. So we will remember the vuvuzelas and how Spain was pushed all the way with Josephs blessings. Mind you he was present now , with Italy he wasnt and is it coincidence that all the last World cups were taken place in non european countries? I dont think so!

  • JoseJosue

Against Uruguay, the Dutch committed a a foul before their first goal, which didn't count. The Dutch also should have had a man sent off early in the game. Uruguay didn't stand a chance with those refereeing errors. Don't you get it? The Dutch got their pushes too.

Of course I don't actually believe either team was the beneficiary of some hidden FIFA conspiracy to produce this final, but then again, we can't all be as gullible as you.

  • Theo1973

OK you are not willing to accept the truth, so there is no point in trying to enlighten you, stay in darkness and believe what you want. For me is simply enough knowing that people will remember this World cup for the vuvuzelas how impressive Germany has played and how Spain was pushed. Thankfully all the spanish players are old so we will not see them in the next one. Hopefully some young ones will enter the team with apetite to play football rather than the fantastic spanish tactic that you desperately try to convince me; “as long as I have the ball the opponent cant score”. The future is Germany ,according to this World cup at least.

  • JoseJosue

SHOW ME THE LIGHT, GOOD THEO! Seriously, get out of here with your pathetic bias. We'll never know who was the better team between Germany and Spain… if only they had played a game against each other in which one team dominated the other for most of the game and scored more goals than the other.

Germany did well, but that's only when it was able to play the counter-attack after an early goal. Watch the games instead of creaming yourself over scorelines.

  • Theo1973

I am a true believer now , thank you mate .I was wrong and you are right. SPAIN THE BEST TEAM , feeling better now?

  • Theo1973

Good am glad you liked it. You have stopped saying rubbish so it did the trick.

  • Theo1973

You did like this one too? Suddenly with a very positive attitude Jose. Am surprised. Have a nice day

  • Bense235

I can picture free kick fetishist rewinding the tape, watching it over and over again and having already used two boxes of tissue by now…

  • leiris

you must not have watched these games, because Spain was clearly the better team in each of these games. Spain was the cup's best team and deserved the trophy.

  • Theo1973

I did and even Ray Charles and Steve Wonder could see the criminalities that took place in order to help Spain to go through. You didnt so there is no point in talking to you. Believe what you like the time will give you an answer

  • leiris

hahaahha you and you're orange friends are the only ones who see that! it's hard to find any writers, or grounded football fans who'd agree with you. the dutch were out played and your conspiracy theory ideas put you (not me) in the minority, brother! i hope you get over this soon. i also hope the dutch get back to playing clean football again because i've always enjoyed/respected them when they play like real footballers.

  • Theo1973

I took the liberty to put some videos, could find more. Some teams got some whistles in favour; argentina(offside goal Tevez) Germany (ungiven goal Lampard) etc but that was it.
Here is practically every single game in favour for the Spain and thats the issue here.
The only game that the ref didnt help them was against the Swiss and thats why they lost. The spanish did complain aggressively that the ref was for Switzerland.Notice it was the same ref for the yesterdays final. Did he get any threats? Thats why so much in favour for Spain? Here you go, have a laugh! Write your rubbish to convince me , the picture doesnt lie!!!

    (Offside goal Villa against Portugal)

(No reply in the penalty kick for Paraguay- the whole spanish team in the goalies area)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX2alaADC-I&feat...
(Foul to Özil and red for Ramos)
And this for your favourite player Iniesta- watch him playing the dead, how quickly stands up to do this when the ball wasnt event there. Mind you the ref stopped the game and had a word with him- what a punishment

1.Wait for my next comment ,awaiting approval from the moderator.
2.Thank goodness that the spanish players are old and will not participate in the next W Cup so young ones with appetite for football will play.
3.I am not with Holland , am with justice. Its simply unfair how Spain was pushed (see 1.)
4.We still talk for Maradonas hand in 86 and noone says that Argentina was great. Coincidence? I dont think so.(See 5.)
5.Give it time. Be patient. Time will tell you that we will remember the vuvuzelas , the Germans and the bad refs

  • dye_go

Seriously? Dutch fans are gonna complain about the corner kick that wasn't given? THAT'S the route they wanna take? Wow. Talk about reaching…

  • Theo1973

No Dutch . Simply being fair. its about justice. Watch the videos. Greetings from Switzerland

  • leiris

  • leiris

haha. and that corner was the largest piece of injustice during the game?
Theo: a crusader for justice (fighting for justice one blog comment at a time). Ohhh Theooo, you're so crazzyyy…..

  • Theo1973

Did I mention any corner? Have you by any chance been taking any expired ecstasies ? Only you been in oblivion can explain your persistance to deny those videos. Am so happy cause Spain have lost against us. Greetings from Switzerland, dear

  • leiris

I wish the best for you Theo. It's football, and we're all here and we're all fans, it's nothing more. Wave on my good man! Peace be with you.

    Where do I start…?
Portugal goal: I didn't notice there was even an argument about this till now. I'm not fully convinced; I don't even remember the Portuguese players complaining about an offside there. If it was, and it may have been, it was just as offside as Italy's disallowed goal versus Slovakia. Both calls are so incredibly close that you can hardly fault a referee for making the call wrong. Even with video replay, this would still have come down to “You win some, you lose some.”
Paraguay penalty: The encroachment had absolutely no affect on the penalty. The two or so players that may have encroached were completely out of sight for Cardoso. That penalty not being scored was simply Casillas being his awesome self. The refs did not help Spain that game. When Xabi Alonso took his penalty, they made the correct though harsh decision he would have to take it again. When he did, Fabregas would've had the rebound but Villar took him out by the legs. Should've really been another penalty but with all the commotion I understand how the refs missed it. My point is that you saying the refs helped Spain that game is not correct. They were on the end of some bad calls as well.
Ozil-Ramos: There's no way that should have been a penalty or red. Ozil tried to draw out the foul by running directly into the path of Ramos. Notice how he was no longer in the path of the ball but instead cut into Ramos' path. I don't believe this is an officially illegal move, but he took a gamble hoping the ref would see it as a foul and he rightfully did not. Even if it was, I'm not so sure it was in the penalty box.
Inesta: Iniesta was guilty for at least 1.5 dives in that game but that was surely not one of them. The Dutch players are shown performing their typical hack-at-opposition game of football. It'd be impossible for him not to fall. He got up and frustrated that a call was not made (one that probably should've been), his SHOULDER lightly hit Van Bommel who FLEW into the ground at that point and received a free kick because of it. I would think you'd want to steer clear of that video to prove your point.

  • Theo1973

OK Dream on mate , we have eyes and we can see that white is definately white , so dont even THINK OF TRYING to tell us that it is black. There are only a few World Cups that we will remember that the best team has won , the best team by playing an entertaining football without any help of any ref. In 86 we still talk for Maradonas hand and not that Argentina played fantastic and deserved to win; reason ? cause it was unfair. in 2006 noone talks about Italy cause they didnt playgreat as well , we do all remember the Zidanes header to Materazzi. In 2010 we will remember the vuvuzelas, the bad refs and that the best team was GERMANY, no doubt. We will remember of Germany as they are the future and they will enterntain us and they will win the next cups. THATS A FACT. live with it. NOONE WILL EVER REMEMBER OF SPAIN. Cause they didnt play like in euro in 2008 when they scored goals without any help of any ref. If they are so good as you claim to say then why they didnt score 4 goals in every match so even if the refs did help them nobody would say a word. BUT THEY DIDNT. DID THEY? CAUSE THEY COULDNT, COULDNT THEY? and thats the ISSUE here. I would never feel proud of myself if I had won anything in my life if it was with corruption included. Obviously the principals are more important for some people and not for you and thankfully you arent the majority in this world. At least when Greece has won in 2004 got no help from anyone even if noone liked the football they played. The Fact that the world is still complaing proves the dirt behind it. No sorry, I want to be a loser for the rest of my life rather than to be a winner like this. You choose to be a winner no matter what. Well , enjoy it, alone, cause YOU WILL BE!!!
