World Cup 2010 Groups: Who Plays Who in South Africa

wc345

The draw for South Africa 2010 is done. We have our eight World Cup groups and they’re listed below. They’re listed below for reference and discussion, and we’ll add some analysis (group strength by FIFA ranking etc) as we go.

Group A:
South Africa
Mexico
Uruguay
France

Group B:
Argentina
Nigeria
South Korea
Greece

Group C:
England
USA
Algeria
Slovenia

Group D:
Germany
Australia
Serbia
Ghana

Group E:
Netherlands
Denmark
Japan
Cameroon

Group F:
Italy
Paraguay
New Zealand
Slovakia

Group G:
Brazil
North Korea
Cote d’Ivoire
Portugal

Group H:
Spain
Switzerland
Honduras
Chile

A very generous friend volunteered to sit down with a calculator and the FIFA world rankings and figure out which group was the strongest. Here are the groups’ total FIFA world ranking (the rankings of all four teams combined.) The lower the number, the tougher the group, obviously:

Group A: 127
Group B: 94
Group C: 84
Group D: 84
Group E: 83
Group F: 145
Group G: 107
Group H: 74

So mathematically Group H (Spain, Switzerland, Chile, Honduras) is the toughest group. But that’s mostly because there’s no low low team in there, like 84th ranked North Korea which drags down the standard of Group G for example.

  • Gollum

Happy for England… shouldn’t be much difficulty in that group. Italy have it the easiest, and France was the luckiest.

Overall, I like this draw! H, E, and D will be fun to watch.

  • http://www.myspace.com Tommy Wong

I’m looking forward to the Yanks beating the piss out of England.

  • Sethu

Rigged !! France was the first draw from the fourth pot !! Who said making France unseeded was karma.

  • Matt

I think the US has a good shot at getting by Algeria and Slovenia in group C. I personally can’t wait to watch US v. England

  • Coconut

I know Hosts usually get passed the group round, but South African isnt as good as previous hosts…

For Mexico to get passed the group stage, they NEED to beat South Africa… and it doesnt seem unlikely that they wont.

  • MoMONEY

England and the USA should be thanking their lucky stars!!!! That group should have been:

    England
    USA
    Egypt
    Russia

As an Egypt fan im heartbroken because I really think we would have made a big run had we qualified…

  • Coconut

    @MoMoney,

That would be an EXCELLENT group, would be the 2nd Group of Death.

As for Brazil’s Group of Death, i want Brasil and Ivory Coast to advance.

  • Edgar

whoever thinks that South Africa will not make the next round, has quickly forgotten FIFA’s reason to not place extra refs or allowed for replay. Group A should be interesting France and Uruguay have experience and Mexico usually steps it up during big games.

  • Seth

    Hate this draw :(

  • Juz

Bloody tough group for my boys, the Aussies. Can’t see where a 3-pointer will come from there, may be battling for draws, especially as I expect Germany to drop points.

England and Spain should cruise, USA great chance to make quarters.

France continue their good luck over good play. Would not be unhappy to see them go out early after their tedious qualifying campaign.

  • http://www.worldcupbrazil.info/ World Cup Brazil

Brazilian surveys are saying that groups A and G are the tougher ones.

Brazilians are happy to stay in group G, because it means less traveling (four matches in Johannesburg, to reach the finals).

Brazil is a little awkward to play against Portugal, because of cultural bonds (Brazil and Portugal usually support each other in football, when the other one is out).

Commentators say that Brazil and Cote d’Ivoire will pass to the second stage.

ahah thank for the informatiom… i can complete my post cos this entry

  • Andy

England and USA will go through no problems. Can’t see the hosts getting past the group stages. What about group G… Should be some good games there..

  • Damian

I think Spain’s got the group of death…

  • VitalEquine

Tommy Wong is so wrong! No chance youth! Cracking draw for England.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Ivan MEXICO

I THINK MEXICO CAN GO TO THE FINAL BECAUSE MEXICO GETS BIG GAMES WHEN THEY PLAY BIG GAMES MEXICO CAN DO THIS WE HAVE NEW PLAYER TO DO IT TO THE FINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Coconut

Technically, ANYONE can go to the final…

just that its more likely to see a high ranked/seeded team make it to the finals. as much as i love mexico, the road to the finals will not be an easy one. It never has been.

  • Kiko

Dont expect Mexico to beat South Africa in the first match. It will be very noisy and distracting.

Ivory Coast is really unlucky to end up in the “group of death” in 2 consecutive WCs.

Italy and Spain have the easiest groups.

  • Riprock

Spain in group of death? They have one of the easiest groups-same as England and Italy.

  • John

South Africa has a terrible group, the hosts will not progress unless they have some good fortune. Argentina shouldn’t have much difficulty in their group. England get a fantastic draw and should coast through the first round. Germany finally get a difficult draw and they are going to struggle in this group but I think they should win top spot. Netherlands also get a very good draw and shouldn’t have too much difficulty. Italy finally get an easier draw but being notorious slow-starters they will have to keep their wits about them to win this group. Brazil amazingly get drawn into the group of death, Brazil will have their work cut out for them. Spain once again get the easiest group of the competition, they should win every game by at least three goals but will crumble in the round of 16 once again.

  • hawk

Good that Germany is in one of the toughest groups. Makes the boys try hard right from the start.

I expect them to reach at least the semi-finals, along with Italy, Brazil and some African nation.

    Early dropouts: England, Portugal, France.

  • http://spurs.theoffside.com Sam

This is fucking sweet, these groups are very evenly matched.
Group A: Relief to see that it won’t be a yawner. The French media is ecstatic that they got an “easy” draw, but the fact that they got the easiest pot 1 team doesn’t take away from the fact that they got the toughest pot 2 one.
Group B: Argentina will have to prove they are better than what they showed in qualifying. I’ve always liked watching Korea play, and Greece will be riding Gekas, we’ll see how that turns out. Nigeria is not what they were ten years ago, but they still can make shit happen.
Group C: England is going to kill. No question. USA will have to make every touch count.
Group D: Seems there is a consensus that this is the sub-group of death. Germany will be sharp, Serbia were extremely solid and smart in qualifying, Ghana we all know can play beautiful soccer, and Australia are no pushovers, but they will have a really tough time.
Group E: VERY tough group to call. Netherlands are as good as ever, dominant in attack, and Denmark killed in qualifying in a tough group. Japan and Cameroon are inconsistent on the world stage but that’S the point, anything can happen.
Group F: Italy are laughing. New Zealand is gonna get their asses handed to them, and Slovakia will have to fight like dogs to get the better of Paraguay, who are one of the more underrated teams at this tournament in my opinion.
Group G: Like FIFA says Portugal vs. Cote d’Ivoire is going to be the most crucial match in the entire group stage. Brazil have to be expecting nothing but the best. So excited for these games. It would be nice to see Korea DPR score a goal.
Group H: Another brilliant group. No flashy teams, but four very efficient teams. Spain are a joy to watch, you don’t need me to tell you their team is more cohesive on the pitch than any other in the world. Chile showed they could play some great soccer, as did Honduras with their handful of big names. Switzerland has been creeping up behind the “big 5″ in Europe for some time now, showing they can compete with the best with their tough backline.

I’d love to see Cote d’Ivoire, Netherlands, Spain and Brazil in the semis.

  • http://bundesliga.theoffside.com Jan

I think Gekas is only a sub for Greece? Good analysis.

  • Jeremy

Group A is very weak in my opinion as there are no top teams. Maybe my boys from Uruguay can move on to the next round. South Africa will be lucky to beat any of those teams even at home.

  • Coconut

Group A weak? must have balls to call one of the more recent WC winners and the strongest north american teams “weak.”

There are no “easy” groups this world cup.

  • Dhaw

Gotta love those ignorant tarts on Sky Sports who have already called in their shots by saying if England get a decent GK then they will win the World cup without any worries.

    Wow. Just fuckin Wow.

  • Dhaw

    Coconut,

Italy’s group is a cake walk but knowing Italy , don’t be shocked if they start with a 0-0 against Paraguay and a hard winning 1-0 victory against the Kiwi’s.

    That’s Italy – Slow starters.

  • CB

    Holland, Spain in the final

“I’d love to see Cote d’Ivoire, Netherlands, Spain and Brazil in the semis.”

Not possible as they are all in the second half of the draw. I would like to see: Netherlands, Spain, Serbia and Ghana in the semis.

  • Stefan

    “Holland, Spain in the final”
Again not possible, my bet, the final: Serbia – Spain

  • Stefan

Would also like to see the like of Paraguay and Chile have a great WC. All the best for all teams. And yes, I hope that France would be an early dropout. As for the other early dropout I would say: Germany and Portugal.

  • http://www.katieadam.com Katie Adam

I agree with Bryan, Group A seems the weakest. he he Group C seems to hold 2 strong countries. The Brits are mad about their soccer.

    Portugueses com Portugal!

  • http://spurs.theoffside.com Sam

Stefan: The brackets for the knockout rounds are A1 vs B2, C1 vs D2, E1 vs F2, G1 vs H2 and the others on the OTHER side. So if Holland and Spain both win their groups, they CAN be in the final together, goof.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org Constinho

Lets go afrika..its our land,we can do it..thumbs up 2 all 9jerians.we’ll do it.

  • Stefan
