The Luis Suarez Judgement: One Game Only

South Africa Soccer WCup Uruguay Ghana

For some he’s a villain, for others, especially those calling Uruguay home, he is a hero. The ball which he double-palmed off the goal line has given rise to more ethics debate than a freshman seminar with no end in sight.

But there is no debating one thing: his World Cup will continue. Either in the final or the third-placed game, he will play.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez was given a one-match ban by FIFA on Saturday for the controversial last minute handball which denied Ghana a semi-final place.

The decision not to give him a stiffer sanction means he will be eligible to return for the final should Uruguay beat Netherlands in Tuesday’s first semi-final in Cape Town.

Not having Suarez for the semifinals with the Dutch is a massive loss – more so when considering that’s the country where he plays and has made his name – but they dodged a bullet should the final involve a South American team, a banner they now hold alone.

And while getting off with merely a standard suspension, Luis is also taking credit for the ‘real’ Hand of God:

“The Hand of God now belongs to me. Mine is the real Hand Of God,” said Suárez. “I made the best save of the tournament. Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper so it was worth it. There was no alternative but for me to do that and when they missed the penalty I thought ‘It is a miracle and we are alive in the tournament’.

“Now we are in the semi-finals although I was very sad because no one likes to be sent off. The celebration afterwards was impressive, but very quiet because nobody gave us a chance but, with courage, we move forward.”

Diego just can’t win today.

  • Bense235

Well, since he has now decided on being an asshole about it, celebrating himself instead of being happy he got away with it, he deserves a good portion of the blame.

He's not gonna reach the final anyways.

Uhm… I guess we know it with 100% certainty now: Luis Suárez has no conscience at all. I smell bad bad karma coming his way in the near future…

  • http://twitter.com/bktoria Bktoria deJesus

That last line, “Diego just can't win today” made me laugh, hahaha.

Go Uruguay! Even if the odds are stacked against Uru, this is still football! Stranger things have happened. As for Suarez… I must admit: I don't really care that much; I'm just glad that his ban is only one game. I did expect him to be a little bit more humble though. If he is continuously making remarks like this or becoming arrogant + whiney baby, then that would be a problem.

…and another poor-showing of the spineless FIFA

  • http://twitter.com/agiamba Aaron Giambattista

No conscience? He's already known as a pretty bad diver…

Don't get what the whole furor is about. He got the right punishment, the only reason we are talking about it is because Gyan lost his nerve and it was so late in the match. If Suarez dragged down the last man in the 50th and got sent off, would he be called s cheat? No, but it's basically the same thing.

Had nothing against him celebrating either…he put his wc on the line for his country, and it paid off. Why shouldn't he be happy?

  • http://www.mcalcio.com Marco P.

Oh I don't know… because what he did was morally reprehensible? Because it goes against the spirit of fair-play? Because it deprived Ghana of a game they should have rightfully won?

There's two sides to consider here Aaron: the laws of the game and ethics/morality. According to the former, all the right decisions were taken (PK, red card, 1-game suspension). But morally? Should we all sit back silently, nodding “that's the game”? More importantly, should Suárez be proud of what he did and go as far as calling it the 'New Hand of God'?

See if I were Suárez right now, I'd be keeping my mouth shut. Being happy your team is through is one thing, boasting about your handball save on the papers & national TV is another.

(not used with this new structure of comments)

  • http://twitter.com/kamponez Joao Fernandes

    Why is that?
They should have Suarez facing a firing squad? Give him some poison and instructions to take it?

He got a red card, didn't he? He was sent off, wasn't he?

  • Bense235

And now he's being all self-righteous about it, isn't he? If he just would have simply kept his mouth shut, no one could complain. Since he's coming out with such kinda bullshit statements, it's no big surprise everbody is all over him now.

  • M3RACINGBLUE

Well Mario Kempes put a hand against Poland in 1978, Back in the days it was only Yellow ( cruicial Game ), Rules have Change, now you get RED CARD !!! in the Game France and Thierry Daniel Henry Cheated Irland, and did not get Caught !!! that is Football , if the Ref See you, then you Screw and get a Red Card, but if you can get away with it, cheers to you and your people.
La Mano de Dios or the Hand of God by Maradona still a Valid Goal today and the Goal that didn't go in for england and won the 1966 Championship still a Goal today and the Goal that did go in, @ the Germany and England game still not a Goal and Everyone Knows that is a Good Goal, but didn't cound LOL!!!
I do not give a chit how you get there but get there if is a Posibility to do what you can to get there do it, just don't hurt nobody Fisically, hurt them mentally is OK LMAO !!!

The Uruguayan deserve to be in the Final, I hoep they get there , a Country with 3.000.000 that plays with the Heart and do not give up iDesrves another time to be there

This does suck, but did we really expect FIFA to make an exception? Did we expect them to change a rule? Remember this is the organization that saw an instant replay of the England goal against Germany and came away from that saying, “well we'll just no longer show replay in the stadiums.”

Suarez's move is not classy, but it is either heroic or horrific depending on your point of view. I only blame him a bit, it is FIFA who needed to say something. And once more they did not.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1562970200 Mike Castro

Is it right to assume that Luis Suarez has basically been quoted in saying that he won that game single-handedly?

  • jeremybrahm

Realistically, FIFA needs to change the rules on handballs in the box. Inside the six yard box or within the goal frame (in the six yard box), a hand ball is a goal, you are stopping a legitimate scoring opportunity. Yellow card is given for the offense. Ghana was literally going to win until the handball. Essentially, FIFA's rules helped the defense in this case. 90% of PKs are made right? Well, you took away a win by taking away a goal.

  • Jae_AtalantaOffside

Completely agree, he got sent off and suspended and Ghana got their penalty, Gyan just couldn't convert. I honestly can't really fault him for what he did. Although he didn't know it at the time his act got his country to the semi finals. For once I'm glad FIFA has not bowed to public pressure to hand him a massive suspension.

No one is calling for Antolin Alcoraz (Paraguay) to receive a massive ban for hauling down David Villa who was clear through and likely would have beaten the keeper, Alcoraz only got a yellow card too.

  • Z-zoo

He lost my respect with his idiotic comments. Hoping the Netherlands embarrases them 4 or 5 nil.

  • LaurieInSeattle

Penalties are made on average about 70% of the time. So what Suarez did was change the odds for his team by a big margin by violating the rules. When Gyan missed and Uruguay went forward, it was Suarez's rules violation that had guaranteed two more games for his team. (Semi-final and either the 3rd place game or the final.)

If he hadn't broken the rules, another team would be in those matches. So in my opinion, Suarez should have seen a two-match ban and shouldn't play out the World Cup. Anything less is a travesty.

suarez shows disrespect 4 Africans and takes african pride by his hand. If i get him face to face i will blow his head

  • http://bensomers.myopenid.com/ Ben

No, it took him two hands.

  • heytre123

Please… Would you have let the ball go in? Guarantee your team's elimination? He did what any soccer player would have done in that situation.

It is too bad Ghana missed that penalty…

  • coconut85

I'm tired of this weak argument. No, not everyone would have done the same. There are rules that everyone should abide by, and not use them for exploitation. If we see this type of reasoning, these asinine attempts to win football games WILL occur more often and WILL lower the integrity of football more than it already has this world cup.

Are you kidding me?! Weak argument? Will occur more often? Your response tells me just how much you know about this sport. This will happen every time in this situation… for those of us who watch football on a regular bases know this, and can tell you 5 of their favorite stories of times when this has happened. Yes there are rules! And there are penalties for such behavior. Suarez knew what would happen by doing what he did, and he will now happily take his suspension for it… Yes you are right, not everyone would have done it… maybe those in a over 40 coed league, or something like that. But rest assured, at this level of competition… with all that is on the line…yes any competitor would have done this.

I guess every player should start using his hands to guarantee that his team wins regardless of the position they play then…I think it's even worse that suarez later has the nerve to gloat about it afterwards

  • http://twitter.com/HungrySkull Oli Frederick

Alcaraz should've got a red if the foul was a right call… but it was not even a foul..just battling for the ball..that kinda contact happens 10 times per match in england or germany…

  • http://twitter.com/HungrySkull Oli Frederick

I've been watching football almost every week for 17 years … and I've seen people not put there hands in that situation… actually even in this world cup I've seen that…cant remember which match… Luis Suarez is a Disgrace to such a beautiful sport…and you are also for agreeing …were Lucky to have not much YOU and Suarez's on field at a High level…

  • caot89

For fuck's sake, would you let your childhood dream get away if you had the tiniest chance to prevent it? NO! I want to see you in a World Cup quarterfinal in the last seconds of extra-time with the ball about to go over your goal-line and be like “oh man the rules say I can't handle the ball so I guess we're out, you know it's probably the only time I have a chance to get to a World Cup semifinal, but oh well, gotta stick to the rules!” YEAH RIGHT! All you people are just sore about the fact that the last african team is out.

Despite the pity i have on Ghana and on the whole of Aftica for not making it to the semis, I absolutely CAN'T understand how anyone could blame Suarez of beeing an unfair sportsman. There is a fixed punishment for acts such as his handball in the box. The player and the team get punished with a red card and a penalty. That's exactly what happend –> no loss of integrety for football. The rules were kept strict and precise and justice was done for the handball.
Of course the effect of the red card was rather modest for Ghana, but that's their own fault, too! If they wanted more advantage from it, they should have created the chance earlier.
That Ghana didn't take the chance of the penalty was nothing but bad luck… if they had, NOBODY would now accuse Suarez, that's for sure!

Obviously you're not a player. Or most probable you watch too much, and play too little. Or maybe the games you've watch are nanny games. Luis Suarez a disgrace? Please!? Are you kidding? He is a gifted football player!!! I guess you could say something… if he didn't get a red card and Ganha a penalty. But, been like it was, Suarez was really playing “fair”… in football the idea is to win (without harming people, obviously, but even a foul is accepted and you just get a yellow card). And “not to lose” makes part of trying to win. I recommend you to play more and watch less… you will understand and enjoy the game better.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/6J62CHXKZA5CETCYPZY3X6LH5U Glossema International

Moreover… this kind of things are done by those who can, and not those who want to.

  • obaapa22
