The Breaking, Entirely Unsurprising News: Diego Maradona Out.

DV777983

There was a standoff between employer and employee, and one of those wins that battle more often than not.

And it doesn’t matter if your name is Diego Maradona.

Diego said he would not budge regarding his demands that the AFA allow his whole staff to return or he walks. The AFA has politely let him walk.

There’s no need to rehash the reasons why – he’s a nice sideshow, but he’s not a football coach. As such, Argentina had offered him a four year deal with stipulations as to his assistants, because presumably they were trying to replace Diego’s backroom staff with a who’s who of tactical masterminds while allowing Diego to stay the figurehead who thinks he’s in control. Kind of like most presidencies.

Now the AFA will be tasked with finding a replacement who can do better than a four goal loss in the quarterfinals in four years time – not that difficult – whilst Diego will probably go back to the chat show circuit and avoiding Italian customs officers (with a fairly decent success rate).

Sounds like a win-win.

  • Good. He was a terrible coach.

It's good news for the team. Maradona is a shitty coach with no clue about nowadays tactics. He's a great motivator, but a shitty coach nevertheless. That's where the AFA fucked up. They could have kept him in the background as a co-coach and as a motivator. But now, he's totally "burned" as a coach of the NT and you can't go back to co-coach when you had the full responsibility once before.

he was a horrible coach...evidence of that was in how he refused to watch tapes of that game with germany..cause it hurt his feelings...or how he used the exact same line up that was used against mexico against germany

any idiot can tell you that you opposing coach will be prepared for the "tactics" you used in the final game

he played with 2 wingers one def mid and messi behind the strikers....so no midfield< amateur coaching move
  • They should keep Diego as team jester. Motivate the team & such...

Diego has been treated shabily. He did make some tactical errors and omitted players most of us would have taken but is that any different from other "big name" managers who fell short.

I'm ashamed the way that the AFA and some so called argy fans have treatEd him.

We can say with certainty that Argentina without maradona does not win in 86 and would be with 1 star on their jersey!

    Vamos Maradona!
  • He didn't do a bad job. Chile, Mexico, Portugal and the United States would have loved to gone home in the quarter-finals but for Argentina and their fans, this was not enough. With the quality and quantity of players we have to choose from, this performance was not up to snuff. While I'm happy to see him go, I fear who they'll put in charge and I can only hope that the new coach will be able to give us seven games in Brazil.
  • Any reactions from #ARG players (supporting Diego's contract renewal) or just silence?
  • I'll take this for granted. I just hope finally we get a suitable coach for the role. For now Batista is fine.

Best possible news for Argentina. He was an incredible talent as a player, but as a coach he left much to be desired. Loved by his team and nation, but tactically not what's best for either. I hope they find someone worthy, they're an awesome side and deserve better WC results than they've had of late.
