Striking World Cup Construction Workers Stone the Police

By: WC Bob | September 19th, 2007 | No Comments »

There have already been a lot of stories questioning whether or not South Africa’s stadiums will be ready in time for the 2010 World Cup. Ones involving striking construction workers rumbling with police certainly won’t help in the public relations battle.

Hundreds of South African construction workers downed tools Wednesday at Cape Town’s 2010 football World Cup stadium, and pelted police with stones as they demanded better working conditions.

Armed with sticks, wearing hard hats and singing revolutionary songs, the group broke office windows and threw stones at police, hitting one in the head.

Hey, the stadiums might not be ready in time but they sure should be prepared to ward off hooligans and terrorists.
