Soundoff: Will You Be Skipping Work/School for World Cup 2010?

skip7jrArgentina’s educational authorities have come up with a very simple solution for what could have been a very complicated problem. Rather than teaching to empty rooms while kids play truant for Argentina World Cup 2010 matches, they’ve decided to just let the kids watch games in class. Genius.

“The World Cup is a very important cultural event, a party and has a great educational interest,” said Alberto Sileoni, the country’s minister of education.
“Watching a match at school takes up two hours of class time. But if students stay at home that’s six hours at least.”

Can’t argue with that. You could try, but you’d be wrong.

Unfortunately we’re not all Argentinean schoolkids. There will be millions and millions of people around the world who have other obligations during World Cup 2010 matches, and I presume the scramble to rearrange schedules and take time off for key games has already begun. I know from personal experience that when Plan A fails, then Plan B is to pull a sicky. (My apologies to any Safeway shoppers in the Halesowen area who felt their shelves were a little understacked during June and July of 1998.)

So will you be watching World Cup 2010 at work? With your bosses permission or on a sneaky internet stream? If not then have you booked some time off? Or are you planning a series of 24 hour viruses that mysteriously coincide with your team’s schedule?

I won’t have to since I think most games will be at O’Dark Hundred my time, but I’m sure I’ll be dragging from lack of sleep for the duration.

  • graham

i prepared for this years and years ago and was born Scottish. the problem is unlikely to arise any time soon

  • Lowe

Duh…. don”t care what time, don’t care what I have to do. It’s the World Cup Baby!! That and I can DVR the whole thing and watch it at my leisure- which ruins the surprise.

  • Chris

I’ll be on paternity leave during the cup. Talk about good timing, but will I actually have time to watch?

  • SIva

i will make excuses at work and watch all matches live on TV and record the rest of the matches and watch every single of them when i get time,….

  • http://deleted SIva

    watch all GERMANY matches*

  • Sam

I work at a restaurant where I work evenings, so I’m all set to go. Only on Saturdays I work the early brunch shift so I’m pawning that off on my buddy for the duration of the World Cup. Watching every game, kiss my ass.

My boss is a big fan himself and coaches young kids in the Jersey suburbs. He’s very understanding of my passion and will be joining me watching games during work hours. He’ll also understand if I take a 2 hour lunch or come in late or leave early for certain games. And there’s always the dvr. :-)

  • World Cup tipster

I think in England most of the games are at the weekend or in the evening. But even if it’s not there’s a TV in my office and we’ll all watch that!

im watching most of the games in my politics class (my teacher is my school soccer coach) and the rest of my teachers understand that I will be missing class. Good thing those classes will only be review classes for my exams. Can’t wait for the world cup, I have dvr but its so much better to watch the games live, go spain LOL.

  • -nickt.-

i’ll skip whatever it is necessary to skip.

I’m hoping that I will be hired part time this summer where I’m interning because it will then be my job to watch the games.

  • john

For the first round US weekday games, I will be in a long “meeting
” at the bar across the street. Otherwise, I will DVR everything.

After that, I will make selected judgements about the need for a meeting or waiting for the DVR

I asked for the whole world cup off and it was approved! unfortunately i dont have enough hours to take the whole month off, but i will definately be home to watch all Mexico group games (and hopefully up to the quarter finals!), and select few game i’d be willing to watch i.e. USA/ENG, Group G games, etc.

By the time the World Cup rolls around, I’ll be a college grad, so no need to miss school.

However, being a college grad, I’ll need to find a job. If I have one, I’ll try to get days off for important games and record the rest on DVR. Luckily for me, the state of the economy means I’ll probably still be unemployed come World Cup time.

I’m going balls to the wall on this and quitting my job (career change was on the cards anyways – from international development to sports journalism), heading to South Africa for the entirety of the tournament to cover it from the source and to enjoy the festivities. My friends are jealous, I don’t blame them (or you! ha!) :P

  • Dionne

I am so upset that I will be missing the first two days of the World Cup. The first day i will be at orientation since I am starting my first year at college and the second day I will be attending a wedding. :(

  • Seth

I don’t work because being in medical school you just can’t. The semester is going to be over in a couple of weeks, and then I have the entire summer to enjoy.

  • Orgasmagoal

    To Chris
You have your prorities wrong. Im sure your wife and new child will understand if you are watching World Cup. Maybe they can watch too?

  • pencho15

I wasn’t a country wide decision, but back in 1998 my school did the same as the argentinians and let every student watch Mexico games, it does work, you watch the match, have a great time (or bad if you are defeated) and then you are back to classes.
This year I am not working nor studing, I am doing my thesis (a work to get my degree) but I am completely responsible of my work, so I can do it whenever I decide, if there is no emergency I guess I can find some time for the world cup just as I found it for the winter Olympics.

  • Orgasmagoal

All workers should be forced to watch World Cup and drink beer if they are at work. Compulsory attendence.

  • Al

I’m taking off the days that Mexico plays, and watching the rest of the group matches whenever I can or just watch the replays on ESPN3. When the knockout stages commence, I’m going to be working evening shifts only for those two weeks or so. Pretty simple.

  • Chifundo

I already have tickets for 2 games and will try my best to buy more when they start selling over the counter.

So work is not getting in my way! I’ll either take leave or catch it at work.

  • Carviv

I’m hoping ESPN shows most of the games live online. Otherwise I’m screwed.

Since my boss already knows how much I love soccer I am sure he will be spying on my office computer internet usage during the World Cup. So, my personal ipad will be handy.
