Photo: Soccer City Coming Along Nicely in Johannesburg

By: Daryl | May 26th, 2009 | 16 Comments »

I know everyone’s a little worried about stadia not being completed on time in South Africa, but this recent photo (top) of the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg is nice and reassuring. Definitely more reassuring than the older photo (bottom).

Soccer City is being massively upgraded, with an exterior “designed to resemble an African pot” (see above, definitely not hating it) and a capacity of 94,700.

It’s the centrepiece of World Cup 2010, and will host five group games at World Cup 2010 (including the opener), one second round game, one quarter-final and the World Cup 2010 Final itself.

And it’s looking pretty good if you ask me.

I think it looks cool, and will look quite a bit better when its not surrounded by a dirt lot.

Hm, that would not be racist.
Any stadium that looks like any sort of pottery and is that color is ugly to me. Not to mention as Ian said it’s surrounded by dirt (and blends into that color.)

I’m just kidding. Thus the gif as opposed to long offended rant.

Aside from the all the surrounding dirt (I mean plant a tree for pete’s sake!) it looks uniquely good.

Exactly, it looks like a piece of ****. It’s already halfway into 2009, shouldn’t;t these venues be at a more advanced stage? Since they are in the middle of nowhere what about transportation? Taking a taxi through Joburg sounds like an invitation to be carjacked (best case scenario.)

ignorance is bliss. yeah, we decided to put allllll the staduims in the middle of the great south african safari plains…dont worry about carjackings, you will have to run from lions to get to the staduims…have anyone of you ever been on a construction site or do you sit on your couches all day?…..at least pretend not to be so damn clueless….obie the german knows more than all you mops together.
