The timing is curious to say the least, but FIFA decided to unveil the Brazil 2014 logo today anyway.

The symbol is said to represent the first “Green World Cup”, while attempting to represent the “happiness, colour and welcoming nature” of Brazil.

Also note how very fitting that it would be in the shape of the World Cup trophy given the host.

Why does it look like a facepalm?

Among the 200 FIFA dignatories and Brazil 2014 officials were in attendance. Other FIFA Ex-co members present included Michel Platini and Mohamed Bin Hammam, the presidents of UEFA and the Asian Football Confederation, and Germany's Franz Beckenbauer.

Hmm-the timing is odd unless they clearly expected Brazil to be in the finals (in which case, its quite fitting). I like the sign-but Im curious what will be done to “green” the World Cup as I cant imagine massive tourism, development (of stadiums and grounds) plus all the transportation is very good for the environment…

“the timing is odd unless they clearly expected Brazil to be in the finals” — ???

The timing is not odd. This was unveiled in a presentation that's part of every world cup – at the end of every tournament (just before the final), there's an official “handing over of the reigns of the tournament” ceremony from the current host country to the next host country. Part of that ceremony is a presentation by the next host country in which the logo is unveiled, together with lots of speeches and videos and musical stage acts and other similar stuff goes with it. They showed it live on Globo. Interesting to see the well known Brazilian TV personalities were part of it. There was a great moment when Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto were talking and were interviewed.
