Parreira might not Coach South Africa after all

By: WC Bob | August 14th, 2006 | 4 Comments »

Reports out of Brazil say that contract talks between Carlos Alberto Parreira and the football officials in South Africa have hit a snag and that the man who led Brazil to the World Cup in 2006 has not yet agreed to head South Africa.

“Carlos Alberto Parreira will not manage the South African team,” reported the Panorama Deprtivo. “The idea of South African officials was to take a coach to occupy the most important function - the technical organisation of the 2010 World Cup. The Brazilian will not sign a contract for such a post and will not go to Johannesburg as planned next week.”

A couple weeks back it was reported that Parreira would take over in South Africa, but now there are some rumors that head could end up coaching the United States national team.

If I were a coach, I would have to think very hard about taking the South Africa gig. There will be a lot of pressure for the host country to do well in 2010, but perhaps not the resources or the talent for that to be a reality.

Why in the world would South Africa even consider hiring Carlos Parreira. African teams need a European coach to get them over the hump.

Look to Germany or Italy for your coaches who are able to instill a phiosophy of a complete game. The importance of every position not just strikers.

Listen to me I know…..no charge for the advice.

Parreira has no business coaching anywhere after that abominable job he did at the World Cup. But he doesn’t have much to lose with South Africa, who wouldn’t even be in the field for 2010 if not hosts. The best that side can hope for is to be merely competitive. It won’t get out of group, even almost four years out not knowing who will be there.
