Mark van Bommel Went Career Huntin’ Last Night

No one outside of the Netherlands and perhaps Bavaria likes Mark van Bommel. It’s impossible. His mother probably doesn’t love him, and I’ll stand by that. No one seems to brew up the hate like good ol’ MvB. Of course the referees couldn’t seem to brew up a yellow card for him all tournament long, either, which was a running joke until he got his long-awaited card in stoppages for celebrating what he thought was the final whistle.

This “tackle” happened not four seconds before Gio van Bronckhorst’s goal.

Well, that's football. It's a yellow card, but why is that supposed to be all that terrible or even more interesting – worth an article on the front page?

Because you still clicked on it and even commented on the article, that's why. :)

Where is the kick in the face against de Zeeuw?
    That was more spectacular no?

I don't know that “aw shucks, that's just football” is a sufficient argument to defend a size 12 boot aimed at the upper shin/knee area.

  • Bense235

If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Things like these happen in football. Go and ask Ballack.

Dealing in clichés and false equivalency is similarly ineffectual. What's wrong is wrong is wrong. Signing up for football isn't signing up to have your leg broken by a reckless challenge, and it's certainly not something that you can throw your arms up after and say, “c'est la vie.”

But I'll call Michael after the match today to get his thoughts.

More blood, yes. More spectacular, yes. But Uruguay didn't score a goal just after that and the kick didn't have any intent in it whereas as van Bommel clearly did, and did all night.

  • Bense235

I'm not saying it ain't wrong. I'm just saying it's in the nature of the game that accidents and fouls happen, even without massive negligence.

Mostly nothing happens, and in a bad case, a player is having a career-ending ACL injury.

Wow biased much? There have been way worse fouls but no posts about them.

Yeah no big deal or anything.

The kick in the face was a mistake by De Zeeuw, Cacares did nothing wrong (believe it or not) Cacares tried a bicycle kick, a perfectly acceptable move, De Zeeuw decided to go for the ball with his head first a stupid thing to do really (but it shows his commitment to the team).

Meanwhile van Bommel is a hack and likes to provoke people. And the shocking part? He only received one yellow card in 6 matches… the shock of the tournament and the epitome why the refereeing in this tournament has been awful.

If nothing else good has come from this tournament, at least people are beginning to see the Dutch are hardly a clean team. Whether it's Robben jumping 5 feet in the air with his mouth wide open in agony, or Van Bommel just being his usual jagoff self, it's hard to cheer for a team like that.

  • Bense235

It is a big deal for this player, but the game goes on. It's not as if I'm saying this light-hearted. Some of the best and most promising players, Sammer, van Basten, Deisler, had to end their careers. But then again, it's fucking football.

Literal quote Matthäus: “A Lothar Matthäus does not accept being beaten by his body. A Lothar Matthäus beats his body.” As stupid as this may sound, but it has attitude to it.

This shit happens all over football and I'm not drawing joy out of players becoming injured. But it's simply the natural course of the game that it's happening at times. And teams need “enforcers” like Mark van Bommel, too. In the end, they might win them a championship.

I've been a big Oranje fan for over 40 years. Great to see Holland in the final again…. Just wish it would be without van Bommel and the ever failing van Persie. Van Bommel deserved a red card in every match he played! Van Persie deserves the Torres treatment: Put him in, when the team has won…..

  • al_zzap

Yes, more spectacular, but probably unintentioinal and was called by the Ref. This on the other hand…

  • al_zzap

Overall the most surprising thing of this tournament has been the bad referees: goals not awarded (England-Germany) , bad offsides calls( Tevez and others) , brutal things like this one not called ( this is at least a yellow), and on top of that being fooled by diving in almost in every game (Ghana-USA) …. inconsistence all around.

With all due respect: Wow, you really mean that, don't you ? A stupid thing to JUMP high for a ball, because there are some feet flying around there ? A bicycle kick is accepted, but not with an opponent right there near you, risking to injure him. Guess what – even if Caceres wouldn't have kicked De Zeeuw, the ref still was bound to blow the whistle. It's the rules ! This isn't beach soccer, man !
