Liveblog: Germany 3-2 Uruguay, Third Place Playoff

Welcome to our liveblog of the alternate reality World Cup final, also known as the third place playoff match between losing semifinalists Germany and Uruguay. Read up on the game with our Germany vs Uruguay preview, visit the Germany blog for an excellent quote from potential all time World Cup goalscorer Klose and the Uruguay blog for some rousing South American pride.

Whatever happens in this game, I’m mostly hoping it will be a chance to enjoy one last look at two of the more enjoyable teams of World Cup 2010 and wave a World Cup farewell to players like Thomas Mueller and Mesut Oezil for Germany, Diego Forlan and Luis “boo?” Suarez for Uruguay. The liveblog window is below, where that man Chris will keep you updated.

Don’t just take our word on the match. Check out match comments from carefully selected Twitter accounts:

Where are the people who proclaimed this game a useless match? It was a grand game, a fantastic game, and a great drama for the Uruguayans – for they were the better team indeed. Formidable Forlan, Fantastic Fucile, Spectacular Suarez, Classy Cavani – all of them composing a monumental team effort which was in the end spoiled by – until the last game – one of the best goalkeepers of the tournament – miserable Muslera. And the last-minute freekick struck nearly-perfectly. It was beautiful, it was the poetry of football. Glory to the heavenly celestes.

On the German side, the lack of the Polish duo – Podolski – Klose – was definitely visible. They didn't play a great game – but they were fortunate enough to win this game. They deserve the recognition too, for their deadly efficiency.

But I can't escape the feeling that it wasn't a “just” score. But that's the glorious injustice of football.
