Land Dispute Could Cause Cape Town to Lose World Cup Host Status

By: WC Bob | December 5th, 2006 | 21 Comments »

There is a saying about all politics being local and we’re seeing that play out in Cape Town. A dispute over the proposed land on which a stadium for the 2010 World Cup will be built could force the local organizing committee to remove Cape Town from the list of host cities. With building deadlines looming, the possibility of the dispute heading to the courtroom could delay everything, forcing a move away from Cape Town.

I am probably not alone in hoping that the difference are squared away. Cape Town is a jewel of a city and would be a huge attraction for fans heading to the World Cup.

Perhaps if the semi final is taken away from the Cape that would teach the snobs who want the semi final but at the same time don’t want a stadium built a lesson. The government and bid committee have been patient with these people for a long time, and it will be their own doing and their loss. We have other cities that can do the job.

Cape Town would only miss out on the semi-final if the African Renaissance Stadium isn’t built.

Well put Kahuru!

They better learn quickly that the world doesn’t revolve around them anymore. I suspect they really don’t want the world cup to be a success, because then all their wishes would be proved for the hogwash they are.

We’ll manage with or without them.

Perhaps if FIFA had opened the WC2010 to a world-wide hosting competion we wouldn’t be stuck with an incompetent host. It’s becoming all to clear that South Afirca couldn’t even host a hot dog eating contest.

Lionel, why don’t you just stick to baseball or whatever other past time you Americans like, and shove your little misconceptions right up that little hole of yours that never sees daylight? because the world cup is way out of your league. How can you insult South Africa just because there is talk of moving the semi final elsewhere, or are you just one of those natural born naysayers who think nobody else deserves anything other than them, and who just crawl out of the woodwork each time there is something even minutely negative that is being said about SA 2010? Next time use your brain to think not your spinal cord - moron.

Speaking of a hot dog eating contest Lionel, is that your favourite past time? I bet you weigh over 350lbs and you’re a lazy couch potatoe - so obese that he can’t for all the world see & think past his belly and his snot :) UP SOUTH AFRICA 2010!!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen - Let’s try to keep it civil around here. We all love the World Cup and that is more important than name calling, etc. Thank you for reading and contributing to the site.

Hey Kahuru and Thabo what is this dislike for Cape Town? I have never been to South Africa so I am just curious. Do they think they are better than everyone else or is it the last remnant of apartheid? Are there any South Africans out there who don’t share Kahuru and Thabo’s distain for Cape Town? One last question, if this stadium doesn’t get built and a new site has to be located, how long will that take? Is that a quick process to find a new site and acquire it or would that mean a reduction of one stadium to host games in 2010?

And Bob, honestly, why are most if not all your topics about 2010 negatives? Don’t worry it’s just a rhetorical question :)

Kahuru, I asked some general questions that I was curious about. If you don’t want to answer then you have nobody to blame but yourself if you feel that South Africa is misunderstood. Somebody else care to answer the questions?
Kahuru you have some suggestions for positive subjects Bob could address about WC2010?

I don’t speak for the whole country so I can’t shoulder any blame, those who misunderstand South Africa do so by choice so I won’t waste my time and energy whiping a dead horse because their misconceptions are set in their genes, and good luck in finding answers to your questions - I’d suggest you do a bit of research - there’s a thing called the world wide web you know. And the last comment was directed to Bob NOT YOU; I am just wondering why you are making it your business.

Kahuru that was an excellent idea. I went to the bookstore and got “The Internet for Dummies” and memorized it. I then proceeded to google, yahoo etc. and searched for Cape Town and snobs. I couldn’t find a site that explained why Cape Town is considered snobish. Instead of rude posts here you could make a webpage entitled “Cape Town, city of snobs” or words to that effect.
I am not going to address your remark about “their misconceptions are set in their genes”. I suspect that remark was intended to be racial and I’m not getting into that slimey gutter with you.
Kahuru, one last thing. This is supposed to be a discussion are. That means that people with a different opinion have a friendly discourse. If you can’t accept the fact that some people question South Africa’s interest/ability to be ready for 2010 then maybe this site is not for you. Bloggers have argued about the fairness/unfairness of the Italien PK against Australia, the fairness/unfairness of the Zidane red card head butt etc. Why don’t you mellow out and be cordial to others of a different opinion. Some of the worst critics of South Africa have been your own countrymen or former countrymen and not us Europeans/Americans.

One thing you can’t do is lecture me because all you have done is be anti South Africa 2010, and then you have the nerve of redirecting all that bile at people like me who see it fit to tell you and your cronnies that we are indeed a viable host for the 2010 world cup - ‘Maybe this site is not for me?’ Who the hell are you to tell me what I can and cannot do particularly in defence of my country against people like you? Do you really know what is going on in Cape Town and in South Africa that you have to be such the expert to tell us what to do - how bloody arrogant is that? ‘Worst critics coming from my own country?’ what a shame, you don’t even have a clue as to what you are getting into - I have even seen a comment you once made about South Africa probably being the first host to not even advance to the next round - It’s funny people like you want to insult South Africa and Africa in general and expect us to just put up and shut up; well you have a fight on your hands if that’s what you feel. And so what if I feel the people who are trying to stop the Greenpoint stadium from being built as being snobbish - are you from Cape Town do you have any idea what the hell is going on out there? No,no, and no that is why I suggested you find your own damn answers and not to expect us to spoonfeed you - THE BLOODY ENEMY and you expect us to just swallow your insults from you ‘Europeans & Americans’? man get real; get laid or something and leave South Africa 2010 alone - you already had your world cup so don’t poke your long nose into things that are absolutely out of your reach - you are a nobody. Oh yeah, and finally get ‘gene therapy’ it will help your thinking a bit, because with your country’s past anything is possible from some of it’s citizens who give Germans a bad name.

F.Y.I. those ‘country men and fomer country men’ you are referring to are the minority who had been in control of the country since 1652 and all that came shockingly to an end on April 21st 1994 - they have yet to come to terms with the fact that we are running the country now, and that we were given the honor of hosting the 2010 World cup for the first time on African soil. Sour grapes? Absolutely! Man, Ignorance is really a sin if not a desease.

Well despite Thabo’s erroneous assumptions to the contrary (as a Capetonian) I would love to see the Soccer World Cup Semi hosted here. (not that I could afford a ticket, mind you, or would get one as a previously advantaged but now heavily discriminated against individual argh will leave that can of worms for another blog)) but we’ve been guaranteed quite a hefty chunk of national budget for additional infrastructure) SA won the bid on the basis of upgrading an existing stadium (Newlands rugby ground) and it dawned on Sepp that the backdrop of table mountain would be spectacular so he added Green point to FIFA’s list of demands (ie changed the basis of SA’s original proposal) and when the scope creeps the project suffers.
