Johannesburg Mayor: We’re good to go for 2010 World Cup

Forget the chatter about South Africa not being prepared in time to host the World Cup. The mayor of Johannesburg, the venue slated to host the opening match and the final in 2010, says that his city will be rearing to go three and a half years from now.

“Our plans and preparations are on track, on time and within budget,” Johannesburg Mayor Amos Masondo said in a sod-turning ceremony at FNB Stadium, one of 10 stadiums scheduled to be built or upgraded for the prestigious tournament.

I have no reason to doubt the mayor, but let’s hope that in 2010 the weather in South Africa cooperates and no one gets decapitated by flying advertising boards.
