It is Never too Early to Talk about the Weather

With the exception of a couple of steamy days, the weather was never much of an issue in Germany during the 2006 World Cup. Will the same hold true in South Africa?

There are some that are worried that a tournament held during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter might be too cold and that it would be prudent to move the competition from June/July to September.

Given the money that is involved in leagues around the world these days, I don’t see moving the World Cup as much of an option. You’ll recall that in 2002 the tournament was moved forward a few weeks to help avoid some of the worst summer weather in Korea and Japan. There is, of course a big difference between altering the dates by a few weeks and altering them by months.

As for the cold weather in South Africa, today it is 60F/13C. Sounds like ideal football weather to me.

if australia gets the world cup, it would really suck to have it in June/July – cold, wet, miserable months and hard to have fun outside (think of all the open air stuff in germany), the olympics were in September and that was perfect – not too hot, not too cold and no rain at all.

So yeah I gotta say that if South African weather is like Australia’s then September is a much better option than June/July.
