Iniesta’s Late Late Goal Makes Spain World Cup Winners

There were yellow cards galore and more than a few fluffed chances. Until finally – finally – with the Dutch down to 10 men after Johnny Heitinga was sent off, Andres Iniesta received a pass from Cesc Fabregas in the 116th minute, took one touch and then bam, struck the bouncing ball past Maarten Stekelenburg in the Dutch goal. 1-0 to Spain, who are now World Cup winners.

studentpenet.ro I am sure that this was an offside goal. I mean… the arbiter was almost beaten up by the dutch's. Sad… Netherland deserved it…

  • epochVHS

How in any way was that a goal kick instead of a corner? That needs to be added to terrible decisions that affected a game, along with Puyol's takedown of Robben on the break that should have been a straight red. However, worldcupblog only mentions the de jong lack of a red card-at least he got called for something. An extremely disappointing Spain today that I am embarrassed to say I ever liked-the referee does not need five Spanish players calling for a foul all the time.

Spain was more deserving they played nice football. the dutch played really dirty today, should have been at least 3 red cards for holland.
P.S. No offside on the goal Iniesta was about 2 meters ONSIDE

And who the fuck made Diego Forlan the best player of the tournament? FIFA has gone bonkers. I'm not saying it should have been a German. It could. But there are 4 people coming to my mind immediately FIFA would have been better off with.

  • JoseJosue

    Better team won.

  • oskardevarsovie

First: stop cursing. It's annoying. Second: have you watched any of the games on this tournament? Show me a player who's shown more leadership, passion, perseverance and had more influence on his team than him. Not to mention his superb skills, beautiful goals and flair. I don't think any other player deserved it more than him. Especially the overrated Germans.

  • oskardevarsovie

What offside goal? Where exactly was the offside? How did they deserve it? For all their talk about how they're gonna tear Spain to pieces and overshadow them offensively, it was a pretty mediocre – though very brutal – showing

  • JoseJosue

No one man carried a team better than Forlan carried Uruguay. To think, he played his last two games in pain, due to an slight injury in training.

  • Dumitru86

Spain deserved it , no doubt, although it was quite a disrupted game. Except for a few contra attacks, Dutch brought nothing. Best team won.

  • oskardevarsovie

It wasn't pretty. But there was drama, and passion (maybe too much) and a happy end. Spain once again dominated the midfield, although admittedly, less so than against Germany or Portugal. The Dutch resorted to counterattacks and if Robben kept his cool, it might've worked. But the same could be said of Villa, Iniesta or Fabregas (who repeated the Pedro's selfish play in a crucial moment of the game). As both sides grew tired, Spain's advantage was more and more visible until finally it paid off. Being on their last legs and half-expecting the penalty shootout, Spain capitalized on one of their trademark plays, with Iniesta launching a sublime volley to send 46 millions of Spaniards into total frenzy. In the end, the better team won, and I don't think there is much case against Spain as the best team of the tournament.

Of course there will be a lot of talk about the refereeing. Now I, being a Pole, would be inclined to complain about Howard Webb who refereed in the infamous Austria vs. Poland game at Euro 2008). But I actually don't think he's done a bad job There was a fair number of borderline calls and non-calls (the outstanding one being the Puyol foul(?)), but I don't think there there were major blunders that undermined the game. It was a tremendously difficult game to ref, with the very brutal fouls and a lot of nerves. But I though he did well, showing a card for every harsh tackle. Which, however, didn't cool the player's heads as they continued to hunt for their bones. There could've and should've been even more cards, but in the end a fairly good showing.

First: I'm fucking swearing as long as I like to. Especially if something is as ridiculous as that is. Secondly: Learn proper English. Third: I've watched the games, and Uruguay faced France, South Africa, South Korea, Ghana and Mexico before being bested by the runner-ups. Go figure.

I'm not blaming anybody for that, you can only beat the opposition that is being presented to you. But then again, when measuring quality – it matters who you've played. Forlan is a great player, but my opinion stands. Oh, and btw., these overrated Germans scored 16 goals in this tournament, fielded the golden boot and best young player award winner and beated Uruguay. And beated Uruguay. And beated Uruguay. With a B-Team. It wasn't me who brought up these stupid penis length comparisons, but obviousely, you've lost this one, too. So: Eat it.

Uruguay is not gonna see more semi-final action for at least 20 more years to come, either.

  • Bense235

Okay, so being injured is an achievement nowadays? What about being mentally impaired? Or having the flu? Or having private problems, as in “a divorce”?

  • oskardevarsovie

    Classy all the way.

  • Bense235

Wait, at first, you're coming up with utter bullshit and then expect people to react “classy”? Go hug a tree. You couldn't recognize class if it would bite you in the ass.

  • JoseJosue

Sour grapes, sour grapes, sour grapes. Spanish champion, Uruguayan best player.

And I will also come back to this, after consulting a linguist with a mild stroke.

Can someone explain to me Villa being replaced by Torres in the last 15 minutes? Was Villa tired? How was that tactical? I am curious.

  • Bense235

See, dude, your team won it. Party your ass off, have fun. But I still don't get your message.

  • oskardevarsovie

I think that was all there was. Villa, like every other player was tired and del Bosque was hoping Torres would make something happen, bring some extra energy

  • aniusk

Hello !!!! I'm a spanish girl. Yes, Villa was tired and Torres wanted play (I don't know say this in English :S) sometime the final….Torres is injured….

del Bosque no quería cambiar ni a Xavi ni a Iniesta, asi que tuvo que ser Villa.
del Bosque didn't want change Xavi or Iniesta…..

    Sorry, my English is terrible

  • JoseJosue

Likely it was tiredness. Torres is likely a good penalty taker, and fresh legs take better penalties.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001137348380 Ssa Bhakta

Good to see that Torres was involved in the play towards the goal. His initial pass didn't make it to Iniesta, but the defender could only clear it to Fabregas. The Spanish team is too talented. (Their no. 10 is not even in the starting lineup :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Riki-Putra/100000218576283 Riki Putra

Del Bosque predicted penalty would happened..
    So, Torres in

  • http://www.facebook.com/m.elizaldejr Marcos Elizalde

Thats right Torres is the better Penalty kick taker. Villa isn't bad at Penalties but he did miss one earlier in the tournament.

  • http://www.mcalcio.com Marco P.

Doesn't Villa take penalties at Valencia?

  • dye_go

Well that and I think Spain could've just used some fresh legs at that point. Villa wasn't his usual awesome self so why not give Torres a chance? And it probably worked. Fabregas may be credited with the assist here, but it was Torres' beautiful ball in that first created problems. Clearly, something worked.

    Spain is awesome!!!!
