Gio van Bronckhorst: The Best Goal of World Cup 2010 So Far?

Netherlands 35 year old captain Gio van Bronckhorst opened the scoring against Uruguay with this long range, laser guided strike. I can’t decide what the most impressive thing about this goal is. Is it the distance? Is it the angle? Or is the fact that somehow GvB managed to strike the notoriously dancy adidas Jabulani ball in such a way that it flew straight as an arrow? I’m going to choose “all of the above” and just say congratulations.

    In a word: yes.

But I'm more impressed he didn't break a hip mid-swing.

    no!

Yes! Listen to the reaction of the commentator. Definitely a classic, and I'd say the ball was at least 35 yds from the goal.

    Absolutely not!

Yeah I think it is. I've never been a big fan of his, but that was one hell of a hit.

A taller goalie would have blocked it, but it was a beauty.

No doubt about it. There have been pretty strikes a plenty during this cup…but when I saw this, I just sat back in my chair at work with my jaw open for about five seconds.

And then proceeded to yell to everyone around me, “Did you SEE that?

Definately the goal of the World Cup Tournament! Unbelievably well executed. No other world cup goal comes close to this one. From that angle and distance, this is truly eye candy for all football fans everywhere.

That was good for all kinds of reasons, but for me, the WOW goal of the tournament is still Maicon's strike in the first Brazil game. Given that no one else could control the ball, the fact that he bent it in from nearly on the goal line still amazes me. And his reaction – unbridled sobbing – said it all!

    I still like Tshabalala's better…
(maybe because I like saying Tshabalala)
