Diego Forlan Wins Adidas Golden Ball For Best Player

DV796703

Heading into the final, when most votes were likely already tabulated, it was going to take a massive swing from either David Villa, Xavi, Wesley Sneijder or Arjen Robben – the nominated finalists – to steal the Golden Ball away from the tournament’s best player, Diego Forlan.

Didn’t happen.

Diego Forlan won the adidas Golden Ball from fourth place after almost carrying his team, like he’s done with Atletico Madrid, through on his back. Wesley Sneijder came in second and David Villa third.

We’ve been lucky in that the tournament’s best team won the title, so no gripes there, and the tournament’s best player won the top individual award, so we’re square on all fronts.

Forlan was tremendous throughout, shooting audaciously but doing it with accuracy and doing it with success on occasion, including the best technical goal of the World Cup in the 3rd place game.

Of course he’s always been this good, at least he has since leaving English shores, and this shouldn’t be a tremendous surprise. He’s simply one of the best forwards in the world, and played accordingly.

Even if he’s still got nothin’ on Paul the Octopus.

“We’ve been lucky in that the tournament’s best team won the title, so no gripes there, and the tournament’s best player won the top individual award, so we’re square on all fronts.”

Yes and yes. God bless Forlan, God bless La Furia Roja.

Finally, a good choice and a thoroughly deserved award for this underrated player. He truly was the hero of the tournament.

Tremendous player and fully deserved. He's been carrying Atletico Madrid and Uruguay on his back for some years, and despite two European Golden Boots has still been kind of cursed as Diego Forlorn by the English media. Seems he's finally getting the recognition he deserves as one of the world's best strikers. Congrats, Diego.

Simply preposterous. I'm not even thinking about a German player that would have deserved it the more – FIFA obviousely didn't want to give all of the awards to Müller. But I can clearly picture 4 players that would have also deserved it – and supposedly even the more.

Then again, FIFA is reknown for dubious decisions.

Deserved win for Forlan! It's been really nice to watch him playing :-)

They would have to come from a quarter-finalist at the very least, and usually a semi-finalist. So if not German, and no one else on Uruguay was as good as Forlan, who? Villa scored five of Spain's eight but a few were lucky. Sneijder was lucky to get more than one of his goals and didn't pass that well. Stekelenburg had a dodgy game against Uruguay. Robben didn't play all the games. Xavi maybe. Schweinsteiger maybe.

  • Bense235

Ah…. if there only was one. And it's not as if I didn't try to buy it.

  • Bense235

Yeah, you're throwing in the names, not me. But maybe Schweinsteiger. Maybe Xavi. Given Spain won it, it could easily have been Xavi or Villa. Or Sneijder. Forlan was good, but to me, not better than these. I'd be biased about the Germans, but I would have rather liked to see Xavi walk away with it.

Because the argument about goals (Müller, Villa) and carrying their team (Schweinsteiger, Xavi) would have been both decided in favour of these, not Forlan. But that's a matter of taste. Bad taste, in this case. FIFA possibly wanted to comfort Uruguay with something countable that they had to give away, at last, for reaching the semis after such a long drought. They knew this was a “one in a score” happening for Uruguay.

I'm not against Uruguay at all, and I do like Forlan, but that was a tough luck dubious concessional decision.

Sorry, as soon as I read “Or Sneijder” I stopped reading. His goals were lucky and his passing game was largely non-existent. He shouldn't have been near the Golden Ball.

Okay, I did actually read it. Forlan carried his team as much as Xavi and Schweinsteiger. He scored when needed and worked as a playmaking attacking player when needed; in fact, he did what Sneijder didn't.

Forlan scored as many goals as Muller and Villa, so I'm not sure why they would deserve it over him.

First, FIFA dosn`t give the golden ball, journalist and experts do.

Second, maybe some of you shoud know more about Forlan. He is brilliant and he was the best player of SA 2010. I suggest you see uruguaian matches and Atletico Madrid too.

Seriously, the third place match was way more exciting than the first place match we saw today. Make no mistake, I supported Spain and am VERY HAPPY!!! Still, the match yesterday had Forlán written all over. This player has been an example to all others, especially to those with the attitude we often see on the field. I will refrain from naming names, but you know what I mean.
Forlán, you're the best in so many ways!!!

    @Bense235:
well… good u didn't want to take names at first…..
Forlan, Schweinsteiger, Xavi, Muller have been the best in this world cup…..
Forlan did what bastian, Xavi did for their teams…..He did what Muller, Sneijder, Villa did, scored as many as them…. All 4 Forlan's goals were outstanding, considering one was of the penalty…. Villa should have scored half a dozen more for the number of shots he took at the posts….. Look at the way he, bastian n Xavi conducted themselves…..
But, Forlarn is truly THE man for the Golden Ball….
    ———————————————————————-

“Hats-Off” to all these players mentioned above n sneijder, he was good as well (though he managed only one thro' ball in the final which should have been scored)….
and if i take Xavi's name, how can i leave Iniesta…. these 2 have taken Spain n Barcelona to all new level in recent years, n it was no different in this world cup too…
    —————————————————————————-
I'm not from any of these 4 countries… It's been years since we qualified for the WC finals….

So happy he got the award. A wonderful decision; not a single player was as consistently awesome as Diego Forlan. Villa was not that dangerous in his final two games as well as Schweinsteiger. Xavi was consistently great but did not play at the level of Forlan, where the opposing team had to be worried about every corner kick, free kick, and etc. that he took.

Diego Forlan…Only player that deserved this award above any other. He was a joy to watch! If only he had just a little more support. Saurez is an excellent player but you need more than 2 players that can carry a team. Uruguay's keeper (name is failing me now) hurt them in the game against Germany.

I could have argued for a few players from Germany but I'm biased. :-)

After Diego scored on that fantastic volley that closed the books on that award regardless of what Villa and Sneijder would do in the final.

BTW…the final was truly an ugly game!
