Del Bosque: Messi Should’ve Won Golden Ball

There are those that feel Lionel Messi was a disappointment in South Africa. There are those who feel he was good, but not great. And there are those who feel he was simply the best player at the tournament.

Toss Vicente Del Bosque into that latter category, because if he was in charge he’d be snatching the Golden Ball from Diego Forlan and handing it over to little Lionel, whose trophy cabinet is probably feeling unloved after a month without a trinket.

Of course that is if it wasn’t a Spanish win:

“Apart from our own [players] I preferred Messi,” he said. “Each game he played he made 20 chances to score, he is a phenomenon.

“We would have liked it to have been one of us. But Messi deserves the Golden Ball more than Forlan.”

For four games, Lionel was a cut above the rest. He was simply unstoppable until it came to the goal mouth, where keepers were suddenly finding an inner Lev Yashin and deflecting all that crossed their path. And then he met Germany, an excellent team with an excellent coach and excellent tactics, who shut down Diego Maradona.

Golden Ball material? That’s another story altogether, but who are we to argue with the man who just won a World Cup?

Winning a Word Cup does not make you a genious…Forlan went there and EARNED it! Messi did good, but not as good as to deserve the Golden Ball….sorry Leo, maybe next time!!!

calm down i'm not EPL fun …. so defensive

the gap between the top two and the rest of la liga shows how the quality is, my point is at WC all teams are equally good regardless of how good you are in a domestic football, some can translate that success others can't. their many factors in the WC. i think messi's problem is that his a victim of bad coaches, no matter how good he is, he will be overshadowed by poor coaches

the question is can he drag his team all the way to the final with couple of good players like maradon or zidane or baggio. thats how he will be remembered on the world cup stage

Lio is always a different, fantastic player and he didn't disappoint. I think his teammates disappointed instead dragging his performance down. As of the end of this World Cup, Messi is supported by world champions at Barcelona. That's the big difference between Argentina and Barcelona. There are no Argentine versions of Iniesta, Busquets or Xavi.

The Spanish La Liga is the top league in the world, shows how much you know about Futbol, where is your National Team ranked, well above hundred i think… If you going to tell me that you think Real Madrid is the only competition for Barca… I dont think you watched a lot of International futbol…

You still dont get it.. Messi's performance in this WC was good and if the whole team had performed it wouldve been great… Yes the coaching lived a lot to be desired from Diego… However every great move Argentina made in this World Cup had Messi written all over it and I'm not even an Argentine to have observed this… Im a brasileiro…

You watched a different game if you say Messi was disappointing… He wouldve been better if the whole team had was performing and actually the other thing the team lacked is the awareness, which leads to us saying, Argentina were not tactically astute during this WC…

different interpretation. we can agree to disagree

and i said it earlier his a victim of bad coaching because the coach should have addressed these tactical problems. i never said his skilled disappeared.. same with CR he was good but the tactics were wrong. they were other more effective and influential players for their team than messi was for his team

Messi is probably the best attacker in the world. Did he show it? No. Did he deserve that award? No. But then again, who does…
