David Beckham Out of World Cup 2010: Will You Miss Him?

david beckham will miss world cupAs Dave posted on The Offside yesterday, David Beckham will almost certainly miss World Cup 2010 after tearing his achilles tendon playing for Milan. Doesn’t matter how golden your balls are, you still need your achilles tendon to play football.

So now we face the prospect of a Beckham-less World Cup in South Africa. My question to you: Is this a positive or negative? Will you miss D-Becks this summer?

On one hand, the public love Beckham the über-celebrity. He shows up and people go crazy, and it seems a shame that the many many Beckham fans either living in or travelling to South Africa will be denied a chance of seeing the man in action. Certainly Sepp Blatter will miss him.

On the other hand you could argue that Beckham the player is an all but spent force and that his presence in South Africa would be more about celebrity than soccer. As with any celebrity, there are also people out there who just flat our don’t like old Goldenballs and so don’t enjoy the attention he receives. I can definitely see how serious football fans might have been annoyed during World Cup 2010 with the multiple camera angles of Beckham sitting on the England bench.

I’m asking this question because I’m struggling to answer it myself. As an England fan I’m not too worried about Beckham’s absence because he’s no longer a key player. It’s not 2002 anymore. As a blogger I’m slightly disappointed because Beckham equals interest, and so his absence potentially means a few less World Cup viewers during June and July 2010 and probably a few less World Cup Blog readers.

It’s very easy to be dismissive of David Beckham. I know this because I’ve done so in the past. But whatever you think of Beckham the player or Beckham the man, I’d argue that he’s one of the biggest names ever to play this sport and so it would have been fitting see him participate in the big show that is the World Cup one last time.

What do you say? Will you miss Beckham at World Cup 2010 or not?

Not in the slightest. I wish for the same to happen to C.Ronaldo as well.

  • http://www.fm-legends.co.cc Samir

Completely agree with Luka! However, I hoped on a last-minute Beckham entry to the national team…The same for Cassano in Italy…

  • http://usa.worldcupblog.org/ Marlon

I won’t miss him, but I do feel bad for him.

  • Dhaw

I have never been a fan of Beckham but this was not the right way to see him miss out.

I hope he recovers and decides to get back on the pitch and then retire.

  • Dhaw

Before he got injured he was fouled many a times and it was heartening to see him not roll on the ground like a pansy and over-react like many many greats of the game have done over the years. Respect.

I could care less about what he does off the field but on the field he has respected the game and worked hard.

He is not a great footballer but he is good at what he does and despite all the fame and fan following – the man has kept his head on his shoulders.

Yeah, I will miss him. He has been working hard for the game because you can really see his love for it. I just hope that all his hard work will just end up like this. I t is but unfair…

  • Ronald

” He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named ” as he is referred to in my household, is the reason Ecuador was knocked out of the last world cup….

…i wont miss him at all.

  • Juliet

I will miss the presence of a true professional with so evident a commitment to his national team. And Posh’s wild outfits!

  • Mike Diamente

    I will miss him…

No one wanted to play in this world cup more than Beckham, and no one had worked harder to insure that he would be on his team’s squad…

  • Ali B

No matter how you felt about him or England, you gotta admit: Every time there was a free kick and Beckham stood behind the ball, you’d stop, watch, and were a lot more excited than you would be for most other players in the game. That’s why I’ll miss him.
And I hate ManU and Real. So I’m not exactly a “fan”.

p.s: I got to see him score a free kick against Barca when he played for Galaxy (was at the game). I’ll forever owe him for that experience!

  • Jacek

Who knows maybe he would have pulled a Zidane and led his team to the final…. that being said whose career finished more tragically?

  • Albo

David Beckham might not be a great dribbler of the ball, but I admire his vision of the pitch and his ability to kick the ball and leave it right at a teammate’s feet. He’ll be missed, not only by his fans, but also by his teammates.

  • Geenyo

I will definetly not miss him. I think it is time he rests from the game.

  • Jorid

Will miss him fo sho. Although he stopped playing football after he transferred to Real, he’s still David fucking Beckham.

  • jon

I sympathise with David,he is(or maybe now was)a talismanic player for england.
We could say he has been playing too much in the run up to the world cup, when he should have been resting,he is now 34 after all, however the man lives to play football and he does with a passion equal to the best.
The man deserved one final goodbye on the biggest stage in football, its a real shame.
    Keep you chin up becks.

  • Seth

Luka wtf? Why would you wish something like that upon someone, no matter how you feel about them? Someone ban this bitch.

  • Jeremy

All you haters can just suck it..

Who cares about the off the field crap, the guy plays hard, practices well, has respect for the game, wants to play in the World Cup for love of country and not personal accolades, all while offering talent that can make a difference for his team. I will miss him because of his talent and the fact he is a great sportsman. All those star studded prima donnas could learn a lot from a constantly maturing Beckham.

  • http://hotmail.com Nager

feel bad for him really imagine if u were in his shoes right now no more world cup shouldnt happen to anybody

  • http://australia.worldcupblog.org Luka

Hi Seth, did I upset you? Maybe I should have been more specific… I hope C.Ronaldo pulls a hamstring on the 10th of June and makes a complete recovery by the 11th of July. Good luck having me banned by the way, let me know how that works out.

  • dia

I will surely miss him, he’s such a good player
    I wish him speed recovery

  • riyah

i will miss david beckham a lot. he worked so hard.he’s such a great player, with wonderful skills.he has always been so proffesional.there is no other player like beckham .he has done so much for his country and deserves respect from everyone. he loves footall so much and this injury is very unfortate .though he should be very proud of himelf as he has achieved so much in life in such a short time.and no matter what, i will always support him. i hope he recovers quickly and will be able to play football again.

  • melly

I will miss david beckham soo much
I feel so sorry for him.

  • Arminius

Beckham had long outlived his era of top accomplishments; the somewhat pitiful performance in Germany 2006 gave proof. And anyway, he had been brilliant, with a proximity to genius – but only in a rather limited part of the scale of soccer virtues.

But he is a very likeable man, with a personality displaying a type of sportsmanship that is increasingly harder to find among the top stars of today. And therefore it is understandable that so many soccer fans, irrespective of their background and/or native country (this voice speaks from Germany) feel sorry about this cruel end to a fair sportsman’s ambitions.

P.S. Luka, pooleeeze …: Just go away.

  • Pappa Xavier

    Sorry, Who David Beckham?????????????

  • http://www.beckhamdavid.co.uk David Beckham

Good to hear Becks. I wish u and Nesta a speedy recovery so u can both get back to us as soon as possible. *Hugs*

  • http://7pop.net/ 7pop.net

    WHAT? R U mistake???

  • http://www.paperdistribution.ro sulfy

However not handle that 5-6 years ago, already has an age and I do not think he can run 90 minutes and then play that, as life goes on,

  • Jessy

I’ll definitely miss Beckham! Feel so bad for him.

  • http://ronaldinhogaucho.com andrew

Of course I will miss him!! he put so much efforts to be on the main team, and world cup might probably be his one of the finishing career. I dont understand those people who says that Beckham is showing off on the field..NO! Who says so that means that gay never watched soccer before. And if that person likes Messi(fag) than he is gaylord as well..
