Carlos Tevez’ Offside Goal vs Mexico

I now declare June 27th, 2010 to be official World Cup we need video replay day. The referee and linesman somehow missed Frank Lampard’s strike for England crossing the line earlier today, and now Argentina’s Carlos Tevez has scored for Argentina from what’s very clearly an offside position. Don’t believe Tevez was offside? Hopefully this screen shot will convince you:

There was much protesting from Mexico’s players, and much protesting from Argentina’s players when the referee looked to be about to disallow the goal. Which he didn’t, in the end.

The Guardian’s minute by minute report even suggested that the referees saw the video replay on the big screen, which rendered them powerless to disallow Tevez’ goal (because there’s a strict rule about not using replays for decisions).

28 mins: Amazing scenes here. Mexico are furious about the goal, which should not have been allowed, and which was almost, for a second or two, in the process of being chalked off after a replay was shown on the big screen. That is also not allowed of course. Marquez is booked for a foul on Messi. I’m afraid it’s another technology-debate-stoking balls-up

Indeed it is.

The more worrying this is that Lampard’s goal seemed to be over the line by about the same distance that Tevez was offside. Maybe the referees just need recalibrating by a yard or so?

Buy an Argentina techfit jersey.

What an emberrassment for promoting soccer as a clean and less corrupt sport worldwide! I am German and wanted the German team to win. BUT NOT THAT WAY? FIRE the referee and linesman! And all corrupt FIFA dickheads! Its against their proud to review a WRONG decision made by one person in the heat of the moment! STOP ignoring the video technology. Even a blind could have seen that this was a goal. You not just took away the possible win of the English team, but the German team and their fans will have a bitter aftertaste of this game for ever.

FWIW, the offside line is incorrect – it should be with the second last defender, not the last. Which really only makes the call more obvious.

  • Bense235

Sure, us Germans, we are totally bitter and appologize for routing England 4:1 and advancing to the quarter-finals. As an official representative, let me please ease your pain: I can not taste any aftertaste except the sweet taste of victory.

Seriousely: Do you honestly believe, that England – in this shape – would have pulled off a win against Germany? It still would have been 2:2. Wasn't as if England didn't have any chances to still turn this game around.

This was posted on ESPN by a poster and the I agree

It's just a stupid rule. Offsides rewards lazy defensive and bad decissions by the goalie– as in this very highlight. As a casual observer of this world cup, I can't help but wonder how much more exciting soccer would benefit from removing offsides. It could be very simple– after the offensive team brings the ball over mid-field, offsides should be waived. Have a rule that protects the goalie, and screening– like the crease rule in hockey. And you've created a more open game. I don't need more goals so much, I need more quality shots on goal! You want me, and other US “observers” on board, then do this. I appreciate the game, the skill, the athleticism, but offisedes is just a killer that rewards lazyiness and limits excitement in a match. GET RID OF THE OFFSIDES RULE!

yes i think it sucks that germany will get a lot of it's good soccer chalked off as a ref mishap. they played well and the 2 goals after prove so. also the call didn't deflate the english side as much as this arg goal did to the mexicans.

  • JoseJosue

If getting rid of the offsides rule (or at least overly complicating it) is what it will take to get Americans on board, then I think futbol will manage without them ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gerardo-Cardenas/100000454023733 Gerardo Cardenas

*siigghhh* more bad calls but I still think technology needs to stay out. my biggest worry as of now is diving god what i'd do to get rid of that garbage in soccer

  • JoseJosue

Seriously, I've never been on the video replay wagon. Consider me firmly on it for goal calls. Don't tell me that the refs couldn't have settled BOTH missed calls today in the time the players argued and the replay went up on the stadium feed.
    (repeat of my previous post)

If there were 10 goals in every game, then I wouldn't be talking about video replay. But two potentially more exciting games today had a wet towel thrown on them on two bad calls.

  • netsez

Forget about getting Americans or not, removing that rule will make the game BETTER! If nothing else it will eliminate horrible calls like the one in this game. No more goals taken away, it goes in the net then it counts!

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org/ OffsideSarah

Im pretty sure the Irish claimed the “World Cup we need video replay day” last November!

  • Bense235

Don't think so. Offsides is an integral part of the game. Otherwhise you might have three guys standing up front all of the time and the game would become “different”, but it wouldn't get “better”. It's fine the way it is.

  • netsez

Then enjoy 0-0 games and more missed offsides calls.

What's ironic about this goal is that this controversy wouldn't have existed if Tevez hadn't been greedy.

Messi's ball looked to be going straight in goal when Tevez decided to give it his extra little header to steal the credit and it should have cost Argentina owing to his massive offside position. But Mexico, like England deserved their loss for letting setbacks like that completely turn them off from playing the rest of the game and thus making these decisions completely meaningless to who would have eventually won the game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gerardo-Cardenas/100000454023733 Gerardo Cardenas

What the hell? Since when have soccer nations cared about the opinion of American fans? Get it straight guys, we don't need “more goals,” more “quality shots on goal,” we definitely don't need the offside rule to get overturned, and most importantly, we don't need you to be on board with soccer.

Please stick to american football if you only care about big numbers, or baseball if you only care about useless and lazy players spread out in a big field.

  • netsez

I should have taken out the US part since that has blinded everyone to the discussion of the offsides rule. But since it is out there I will say I'm sure FIFA would LOVE to get 300 million more fans.

  • netsez

Be sure to avoid video replay as well because the Americans do it lol

  • Vic90

A game with no offsides would be all about putting 6 guys up in the keeper face and lobbing the ball towards them. So no, thanks.

  • netsez

You really think that? The other team would move the ball forward and score easily then

  • netsez

    That is a GREAT point!

  • Vic90

“Throughout the 1987–88 season, the GM Vauxhall Conference was used to test an experimental rule change, whereby no attacker could be offside directly from a free-kick. This change was not deemed a success, as the attacking team could pack the penalty area for any free-kick (or even have several players stand in front of the opposition goalkeeper) and the rule change was not introduced at a higher level.”

    ^Offside wiki article.

So, for free kicks it doesn't work. In regular play, it *should* work when the ball is being disputed on the midfield, but imagine this: team A is working its way up the pitch through short passing. Nowadays, the 'A' attackers are bound by the 'B' back four, but in a world with no offside, they would be free to move to wherever. The logical choice would be to 'goal-hang', whereas the logical choice for the 'B' defense would be to have their CB's go after them.

So the final scenario: ~2 attackers + 3 or 4 defenders crammed in the small box waiting for a long ball.

    You're right. It's totally Tevez's fault.

    Except it wasn't.

  • http://www.mcalcio.com Marco P.

Sure. No offsides in soccer sounds so much better. Also, let's make the goals bigger, have the World Cup be held not every 4 years but 2, get rid of drawn matches, and make the ball lighter for women's soccer.

You sir, would be very good friends with Mr. Blatter.

If you pay attention, you'll see Mexico's goalkeeper touchs the ball (it's not that clear, but his hand is suddenly pushed back by the impact), so Tevez wasn't in an offside position.

  • ttni

Hmm…obviously you know nothing about soccer if you want no offsides in soccer. That rule has to be kept always. Argentina stole Mexico the first goal. Bad decisions from bad referees in both games today caused the damages for both Mexico and England.

  • http://myspace.com/jeffxspicoli Grindcore Sam

Read the rulebook. He was offside when the ball was played by his teammate. It could've touched the entire mexican squad before Tevez flicked it in, still offside.

  • amamedo

Guys sorry to say that but most of you know nothing about Soccer roles. Go back to role number 11 in Soccer and it will tell you very clearly that the Offside is only offside when the striker is between defenders and the goal keeper. If the striker is behind all players it will not conseder as an offside. In Tevez situation, if the goal keeper was in his goal it will be an offside but Tevez was behind all the players and the goal keeper (Look at the above picture), Thats why he is not offside.

dunno bout soccer but in football “a player is in an offside position if he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
    second-last opponent”
