Carlos Tevez Enlightens Us: Germany & Holland Have “No Top Players”

SOCCER-WORLD/

Would you believe I’m reading this with a background tab of the infamous Daily Mail headline?

dm

Probably not, but I am.

Carlos Tevez has put mouth firmly in foot, making himself the new posterchild for footballer stupidity at this World Cup – and joining the elite Daily Mail pantheon of idiocy. It’s so good you won’t believe it.

It started as a good natured respectful congratulation in defeat, but quickly turned into an all-time backhanded compliment. I’d say Carlos just won that tennis tournament they’ve been muttering about in the background.

“We didn’t play as a team, and that was our biggest problem,” said Carlos Tevez. “We knew Germany would play on the counterattack, like they did against England, and our mistake was not being able to stop that. It was the fact that we didn’t play as a team that cost us. Of course that’s what happened – are you stupid? We have some of the top players in the world. Germany and Holland don’t have top players, but they won their games and made it as a team.”

Are you stupid? Are you, you sock sucker?

At some point, this quote is going to wind up framed and in museums, with signed lithographs available for purchase in bulk for family and friends at holidays. It’s simply so bad it’s genius.

As for the issue at hand, it’d be an insult to the Germans and the Dutch to name all their “top players” – not to mention the inevitable case of carpal tunnel – so we’ll just leave it at this: if you pop across Carlos Tevez when looking for directions, ask him – and then go the other way.

This sounds much much worse in english than it does in spanish, trust me. What he meant (we have to excuse him, he is not very brilliant) is that Argentina had some of the best players and it didn't mean shit because they don't play as a team. We can't deny that Argentina's strikers are somewhat superior to Germany's and Holland's. Sorry for any grammar or spelling mistake, english is not my first language.

  • JoseJosue

Yeah, this sounds much worse when translated into English. It was meant to be a compliment to Germany's talent, and Argentina's failures. Saying someone is not a “top player” in Spanish doesn't really have the same implication as it does in English.

Of course, what Luis Suarez and Maradona have said recently in Spanish don't carry the negative implications they do in English. But the blogosphere still tends to eat it up and cook up some controversy where there is none, or very little.

    Even if its wrong translation…
YES HOLAND AND GERMANY DONT HAVE SKILLED PLAYERS… I really dont enjoy watching germany playing… very boring and seriously they are like robots /machines….—- put Messi infront one of the german players (FACE to FACE) and then talk

  • http://sevilla.theoffside.com/ SevillaOffside_Joshua

If you stood Messi in front of one of the German players, wouldn't it be more like face to abdomen?

  • JoseJosue

Holland doesn't have *skilled* players and Germany is boring to watch? You haven't been watching the matches…

Put Messi in front of a single German defender and Messi would likely beat him more times than the German defender would stop him. *That's why Germany made sure that situation almost never happened, and good on them for having a plan!*

  • Marcamps

man oh man, that Caveman Carlos is quite the comedian.

  • http://www.facebook.com/halynaiscoolerthanyou Halyna Svitlynets

Are you serious? I think Germany plays beautifully. How can a team that scores 4 goals against Argentina be boring? And yes, German players and Messi were put “face to face” in the game and guess who won?

    its a team game remember?

Why let small things like translation and cultural differences
get in the way of a bogus headline ? This blog, like all media,
wants to attract numbers. Truth is always a casualty in a
    numbers game.

Maybe he meant that they don't have any superstar diva players, like Galacticos such as Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi? That's my attempt to give him a generous explanation.

  • nathan9

tevez is right germany played better as a team and germany dont have stars like messi or top players . it was the team effort that won so whats the fuss.oh and does the german team actually have many germans in it i see a lot of players who only went there to play club football a rule needs to be changed if you ask me .

  • kickster23

Özil, Kedhira, Boateng, Gomez ARE German. They are German-born and raised. Germany is a multi-cultural country and our team reflects that.

  • http://openid.ivern.org/javier Javier

The way I read the quote is that they have no established superstars, which would be true. And they beat up Argentina, who has quite a few of them, easily. I'd take that as an indictment of Argentina's ability to produce as a team rather than a jab at Germany. I don't think he was trying to claim that they didn't have good players, he never struck me as being that delusional. Germany clearly has excellent players, just none of them ever gets mentioned when people talk about “the best player in the world”. I'm sure that'll change pretty soon if Ozil and friends keep doing what they're doing.

As for “sock sucker”, you could have tried a little harder to find out what it meant before trying to claim that he was making up a phrase. It's Argentine slang for a sycophant (brown noser, apple polisher, suck-up, etc.) Not sure if it's used elsewhere in the Spanish speaking world, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

For a certain percentage Tevez is right… and I say that as a German. We don't have this kind of “stars” that stand upfront to perform magic while the rest of the team does the dirty work for them. To be honest, that's one of the things that I like most about our team! Everybody fights AND plays for everybody! Schweinsteiger is great in offence, but still he stays back and defends when Kedhira runs an attack – and the other way round. Even a player like Podolski – who was never famous for his defensive skills – worked alot on his defending in order to be able to help the team. Our top striker Klose goes long ways back to help out those behind him… you can say that for the whole team! No player lets another player down in any way, there's no greed and jealousy among the players. In my eyes that's the reason why we were able to beat teams such as England and Argentina, who's star players – on their own – were better than ours… and that's how we were able to play really attractive football – at least it's really attractive to my eyes. I didn't see many teams at this world cup who played such a nice passing as us. Of course you won't see lots of sole afforts by the German team like Messi, Ronaldo or Kaka deliver on a good day… we just lack the technical skill for that stuff… still I think Schweini did quite well assisting Friedrichs goal ;-)

    Greetings,
    Gordon

  • http://www.mcalcio.com Marco P.

Ah Carlitos… another casualty of cultural and linguistic differences is he…?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gordon-Overkill/720796197 Gordon Overkill

Forgott about the foreigners-point. That's a point that always makes me angry. Exapt Cacau every player in our squad grew up in Germany, most were also born here. A player like Kedhira to be called a foreigner is a shame. Though he has roots in Tunesia, he doesn't even speak the language. He's as German as German can be – no matter what color his skin has. Germany is an immigrant country and in every town in every area there are people with foreign roots. I've got some polish and kroatian blood running through my veins, too. Still we all are united by language, by culture, by morals and by lifestyle, while at the same time there are individual aspects brought in from the original cultures… doesn't stop us from cheering on our national team all together.
Ah, and for Holland they are one of the technically best teams in Europe and even in the whole world for LOTS of years now! And if Sneyder and Robben are no stars, I don't know what a star is ;-)

  • http://twitter.com/Dewlitte Snow White

I'm with Gordon on this one (and I'm german, too). Tevez isn't all wrong. There's no Messi among the german players, clearly. No problem admitting that. Yet I see this as the one huge advantage the german squad had. When Özil was marked too closely to have a proper impact on the game, Müller and Klose were there. – So far, every player is just one “nobody” among eleven “nobodies”. And they seem to enjoy themselves alright.

  • http://openid.ivern.org/javier Javier

Don't let what people say get under your skin, man. It's the World Cup, people have been waiting four years to get this angry and disappointed, so they're all trying to make the most of it. :) I know I have!

I'll take today's Germany over old Germany any day of the week. I'm still mad about Klinsmann and Voller's diving in the 1990 final. I'm not mad about yesterday's game, it was a fair victory. Good luck the rest of the way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gordon-Overkill/720796197 Gordon Overkill

Thanks, man :-) That's just a sensitive point for me because in my eyes there are still too many people around who define a nation by blood instead of by shared values and culture. As Germans we've got some bad experience with this kind of thinking.
All in all I have some really nice memories about WC 1990. That was the first tournament that I actively followed as a supporter and, being quite a young flee, I really enjoyed Germany winning the cup… actually WC 1990 and Euro 1996 were the only big successes I witnessed as a football fan since my club (Hamburger SV) didn't win anything since I'm a supporter. Still I can understand that an Argentinean fan doesn't have that much fun remembering that certain night in Rome…

I'm not taking anything away from Germany, but IF Argentina played the football they're capable of — and Spain too — they'd be unstoppable. My hats off to the German squad though…fantastic execution…World War 3 came to England & Argentina and they both got BOMBED. lol!!
If the vaunted German military machine during WW2 was that efficient, I could see why the world was in danger.
I truly believe that football clubs around the world should take a peek at how Joakim Loew does his coaching. He sure knows how to MAXIMIZE his player's abilities: priceless.

  • http://twitter.com/maxtheitpro Max – The IT Pro

BTW, I was hoping that Messi would've taken over the game — sort of like how Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls did whenever his team was struggling in the NBA. Jordan would simply rise to the occasion, dominating the opposing teams' best players while lighting up the scoreboard. Then again, Messi isn't a physical specimen like the elusive Air Jordan.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gordon-Overkill/720796197 Gordon Overkill

Don't forget that he's just 23 years old. A Messi of 27 at the top of his career will be nice to see in Brazil.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/7X4MLZFNQJ3UMSZZFBQOEAVBHY obst

what rubbish… I dont think argentina, brazil or spain are unstoppable even if they play whatever you meant about them being capable off. its on the pitch that the real game is not in the mags and tv shows.. not even in british tabloids. all this stupid media hype is can actually be very false sometimes. i think the young germans are actually more unstoppable than these so called big names.. i mean see how young these guys are.. its so great to see the german thrash the butts of england and argentina.. it shows that media predictions all the hype can go so wrong!!! infact it kind of embarrasses them and tells them to keep their mouth shut for a while!!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ME5EMIJFMLO2R5TAOAGEASYGH4 yahoo-ME5EMIJFMLO2R5TAOAGEASYGH4

fact is Germany and Holland (even with Kruyff) would never produce a player like Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo (the real one)….yes they play like a team blah blah blah and they can win (steal some… 1990) and reach many finals (and loose many too)…….footballs is not all about wining and scoring many goals……the best team to play was 1982 brasil and they didn't win!!

  • hads

I totally agree with nathan9….The German team is made up most of none German players….must be nice to just pick who ever you like ….even when they are not German !!!

  • hads

    German team is a joke!!!

    Lukas Podolski is Poilsh
    Cacau is Brazilian
    Mario Gómez is Spanish
    Miroslav Klose is Polish
    Marko Marin is Bosnian Serb
    Piotr Trochowski is Polish
    Mesut Özil is Turkish
    Sami Khedira is Tunisian
    Jérôme Boateng is Ghanaian
    Serdar Tasci is Turkish
    Dennis Aogo is Nigerian

They are some of the players who represnted Germant at the 2010 world cup….Last time a looked at an atlas….Brazil,Poland,Bosnia,Nigeria were not part of Germany.

  • nathan9

i wonder who will suddenly become german over the next four years . do you think they will still be called germany or will they change there name?

  • hads

Who is this Gordan prick….He reckons he is German hey?…Ill show him German….Ill cut his head off!

  • nathan9
