Argentina to Offer Diego Maradona Four More Years

diego maradona to stayDiego Maradona will apparently be offered a new four year deal to stay on Argentina coach when he meets with Football Association president Julio Grondona next week. At first I thoughtn the BBC were just making things up to fill a slow news days. But a bit of Googling and translating reveals that the news comes directlyfrom the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino website:

Personally, I think this is brilliant news. I enjoyed Maradona at World Cup 2010, not just for his comedy moments (see above) but for his dedication to attacking football and the manic passion he brings to the touchline. No other coach in the world hugs his payers like El Diego does.

The man may need some tactical help (I hear Jogi Loew’s still laughing) and there may be many Argentina fans who want Maradona gone. But for the sheer excitement of it all, I’d love to see Maradona re-sign and coach Argentina at Copa America 2011 (which they’ll host) and World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

Beside the very well known stupidity of Grondona, this decision is 60% wrong and 40 % right. I'm not really on or against this decision but I believe he better does as he said after the elimination and step down.

Maradona is REALLY GOOD………..at kissing and hugging…mhmm…but not so much at coaching the national team…I'm not saying he's the worst coach Argentina has ever had…but…in the end…I would really like to see him again…after all, El Diego has been known for his show-man style!! He really knows how to put on a show!!!

Hmmmm… it's hard not to like Argentina's all-out-attack style but I would also like to see them WIN some stuff and that style is not winning football. Here's hoping the Germany game was a big lesson to him and he keeps the general style but knows where he went wrong. In the end, I WOULD like to see Argentina win a cup and it'd be even better under Maradona.

I can't think of a marquee coach for the Argentine side that could stand to work in the hottest coaching seat there is in Argentina and with the most involved FA president there has to be in the world. Diego seems perfect for the role he might leave vacant since he is a larger icon in Argentina than most of the high profile players he has to manage and even the AFA President Grondona has to step aside when he and Diego appear in a photo. He's got that side of things all set up but he's not the tactician that the Argentine players (and fans) need him to be so let's hope, that his assistants will change or realize that they need to take a master class in tactics and formations otherwise, Grondona will have successfully allowed one of the most talented generations of players we've ever had, go completely to waste without winning one trophy.

Great news for Argentina to keep Diego. He may have some tactical things to sort out but most argentines feel the players let Maradona down.
